What do Pittsburgh's pro baseball, football and hockey teams have in common that no other city's teams do?
They make it easy for their fans to wear their team colors, that's what. The Pirates, Steelers and Penguins all sport the same combination - gold, black and white. No other city in the United States has this degree of unity in team colors.
Even though they share colors, the teams seem to do what they can to make their uniforms distinctive. In the 1970s and 80s, the Pirates revived the old 19th century style pillbox caps. The Steelers are unique in that their logo only appears on one side of the players' helmets (the right side, as they're worn). And in 2002, after a few years of a "modernized" design, the Penguins formally re-adopted their old-style skating penguin logo for both their home and away jerseys.
Sure, we love Mr. Met and the Rams' horn - but Pittsburgh is undoubtedly the home of pro sporting style.

What Pittsburgh has when it comes to teams, especially Steeler fans, is fantastic people. I lived in New York most of my life, and when I came here, I was amazed at how football brought people together. This town is the most amazing football city, and I don't think you can appreciate it unless you've lived somewhere else. The black and gold binds people together, crossing ethnic, income, and social standing barriers. I'm sorry when football season ends, but thank God it comes around every year! :-)
The Penguins led a mini-trend in the NHL. A lot of teams adopted black as one of their primary colors after Pittburgh did. It seemed like the merchandisers were all looking at the same data: that 'Black' sold well.
No, they don't turn the fountain on at the Point until later in the Spring (it would be very bad if it froze). Plus, from where I sit, I see no hot air balloons.
I heard that the fountain is fed by a secret 4th underground river. Can anyone confirm this?

The Burning River rules!
When the fountain is in operation, there are over 800,000 gallons of water in the system. Three 250 hp pumps operate the fountain. Two pumps force the water in a columnar effect to a height of 150 feet. Three subordinate peacock tail pumps of 75 hp each generate 1,000 gallons of water per minute, creating a special fan design symbolizing the three rivers. These peacock tails, lighted separately by underwater fixtures, together with 24 white and gold quartz-iodine lights in the hub, enhance the grandeur of the fountain. The circular basin of the fountain is 200 feet in diameter.
Water in the fountain is recirculated. Water to replace the amount lost during fountain operations is obtained from a 54-foot deep well that penetrates sands and gravels under the park. These sands and gravels are below the groundwater table and are saturated with water that infiltrates from the adjoining rivers.
It's true. My cousin came to Pittsburgh a few years ago to see a Pearl Jam concert. She was baffled that after the concert, the entire crowd evidently started the "here we go, Steelers" chant -- especially since it was in the spring, during basketball season. :)

Not just Green Bay, but all of Wisconsin's major pro sports teams.
Pittsburgh is the most underrated city in America. It just needs to produce a Bill Gates or Paul Allen to "come home" and provide jobs to attract young people.
