The Penguins led a mini-trend in the NHL. A lot of teams adopted black as one of their primary colors after Pittburgh did. It seemed like the merchandisers were all looking at the same data: that 'Black' sold well.

It seemed like the merchandisers were all looking at the same data: that 'Black' sold well. Actually, it's more than that. Black and Gold are the official City of Pittsburgh colors and that's why the teams use those colors. In fact, many of our bridges are painted black or gold.

The Pens colors used to be blue and white. I remember when they changed Boston was having fits.
Did the Pens do it for city unity? Nahhh! They got to sell alot of new shirts and other merchandise! Smart business men.
