Yes. People can lose all mental function with little cortical loss or can not despite large loss, as your example points out.

Recent attempts to curb serious epileptic seizures have involved surgical removal of large regions of the cortex without loss of mental function.

Large cortical damage generally will, of course, be associated with loss of mental function, as in Schiavo's case. Still, no one understand exactly how the brain works.

Thanks so much for the info. When I heard that he would allow an autopsy I figured he would only allow the brain - there has been some info. about healed rib fractures. How the courts ever found in his favor time after time I will never know!

I have a question about the bone scan,that shows fractures ribs etc.
It was taken at the re-hab hospital. It has bothered me why was it done.
My son is now into twenty years similar to Terri, but there has been no bone scam post the truama.Why? for what reason would there be?. X-rays at the time showed fractures from the incident,but why months later would anyone do a bone scam?
Michael now contends that the fractures must have occured after the incident.in the rehab hospital. Baden I saw on Fox news , (Greta Van Ze Truth?) said the same thing.

This scenerio troubles me. If Michael Schiavo fresh from wnning a malpractice suite, thought that the re-hab hospital had caused the fractures, why did he not sue?

And if it was not Michael,then who ,what, and why ordered the bone scam?
