Who decides one's own defintion of quality of life?

In 1976, when mom's cancer returned, I called the local Cancer Society requesting information on cancer treatments. When I asked about chemo...the person in a tone of oh my dear how awful this would be said, " well, your mother would lose all her hair." I was appalled by that statement. Obviously, that person's hair meant more to her than the extra 3 years my mother was able to spend with her family.

The same body of laws that allows Michael Shiavo to remove Terri's food and water tube and cause her death would prosecute him for murder if he took a pillow and smothered her. Both actions would be premeditated actions. What is the difference HERE?

When we lived in San Antonio our dear friend had cancer. She developed pneumonia. Her husband was frantic. He was told why treat her pneumonia, she didn't have that long to live anyway.

He insisted she go to the hospital, after a long fight with the doctor, she was admitted. I had never heard of such treatment.She died about a month later, but the heartache her family went through, just to have her last days be comfortable was so unnecessary.

kassie, reminds me of the time my beloved grandmother was in hospital for treatment at the end of her life. When we asked why her tray was wheeled into the room and left with no one to feed her until we got there, we were told "She's going to die anyway..." Poor thing was trying to feed ehrself as evidenced by the food on her pj front. That night my Mom insisted nanny come home to die.

This all is so hard for so many of us. I didn't know they were not giving her (Terri)morphine - I thought that was part of the protocal.

I think Terri's situation brings back painful memories for a lot of people for a lot of different reasons.

I just watched a 69 yr old woman, a sweet looking elderly woman, get arrested for trying to take water to Terri.

I am in tears.....I think I know what will happen to her.

Maybe you do too.

God bless her.....she has a lot of courage, but that doesn't mean she's not afraid.

But the Bible says to not be afraid what they can do to the body....

....It says to protect your soul...your body will corrupt in the grave anyway.

I'd like to refer people to another that I have no time to read right now, but the introduction seems to cover all the bases in a way I haven't seen yet, and demonstrates why so many people of good will are of differing opinions - and stridently so. I'm going to be using it as a reference piece, I suspect, just for the intro. I have no idea yet as to whether I'll accept the argument and conclusions. :

It's so hard to understand comments and treatment like you two have described.

Locally, some of the doctors were quite out of sorts when we stated we were trafering mom to Philly. The care my mother got at the Mercy Hospitals in PA was outstanding. When I visited mom the hospital supplied a room for me to stay in. The nuns and priest were so caring.

I came from a small town. My husband and I were born in the same hospital and delivered by the same dr. Everyone knew everyone. Everyone was treated with dignity and respect.

I do not remember the hospital Phylis was in, nor do I remember the name of her cold hearted dr. Once in the hospital, she received good care, it was just getting her there that was so unbelievably difficult.

I remember that early morning when I turned on the tv to se they reno thugs had snatched Elian. I cannot describe the outrage I felt over it. I am just sick and sad beyond belief at the Terri situation. I hope God will send an intervention to save her now.

One of the latest posts (#99) says "TXCN is reporting that BP has confirmed 4 fatalities; UTMB hospital has been told to expect 10 people inbound, inluding medevac. Vehicles are cooking off by the main fires. The plant makes 30% of the BP branded gas in the US an I think they said 13% of the gas in the US."
