The FBI wants to talk to me
3/22/05 | Self

I got a call from an FBI agent in my local office today. They also left a business card at my residence while I was a work. They want me to come down for an interview. They will not tell me any specifics except that it is within a criminal investigation.

Aren't all lawyers criminals?

> they're monitoring you on this forum right now!

Everyone needs to assume that at least their 'bots are.

> just kidding.

You're kidding yourself if you think you're just kidding.

And anyone who thinks they are truly anonymous here is
indulging in wishful thinking.

Thanks, I spoke with the agent at some length and my gut instinct says not to worry....(BEARLY!)

I will take an attorney or at the very least consult with one before I go, if I go. They did say they couldn't force me to talk to them.

Like I told the agent:

"Hey, an innocent man has a lot to worry about these days."

Make sure you have a living will.

Just kidding. Ask them if you are the object of an investigation or the suspect of a crime. If not, I wouldn't sweat it, and I'd just go down and answer their questions. They may actually be trying to do a good job in a needful case.

If you've been accused of anything though work through a lawyer.

If they refuse to tell you the nature of the discussion then you are under no ethical (or legal) obligation to visit them.

If it isn't important to them, you won't hear from them ever again and the problem will be solved.

If it is important to them, they will either provide you with more information (which you can use to make a more informed decision) or they will come to see YOU which makes it irrelevant whether or not you went to see them in the first place.

In any case, if they ask you any questions that make you feel uncomfortable, such as questions about yourself or about your past behavior, you always have a constitutional right to keep quiet and consult a lawyer.

TEll them to meet you at your Attorney's office. Take a tape recorder, otherwise it is your word against theirs as to what was said.

Take my advice and "run silent, run deep", don't go to bed without telling your family that you love them, verify that your "living" will is up to date, and don't waste your money on an Attorney.....

Some little Weepy Willy liberal dropped a dime on You, and You made the list. You are in good company on that list, be proud of it! Never believe one damned thing that is said to You about intent, assume that they possess a copy of everything You said to anyone, and just tell the truth.
After it all is over, just remember that arguing with liberals is a total waste of breath.

Tape recorder. No tape recorder, no interview. The FBI likes to use hand written notes only, which sometimes do not reflect what was actually said in an interview. (To put it politely.)

Hmmmm. After years and years of collecting bills for the government let me tell you that you did not successfully read the agent.

They read you, but it doesn't happen the other way around.

The government guys, whether for civil or criminal matters, are vastly more experienced than you and have a small army of additional experts and legal counsel backing them up ~ even for the pettiest of matters.

I would definitely tape record the entire conversation. Use Bluetooth technology if you must. And I would contact an attorney. I never speak with government bureaucrats without them.

Remember, the 10 scariest words in the English language:

"I'm from the government, and I 'm here to help you."
