*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Deniro looks like he'd make a good dressage horse. The other guy looks like he might make a cute dressage horse or jumper. He's more streamlined then Deniro is. They're all nice looking horses. I want one! :-)

I guess what worries me is that she's a maiden mare and her due dates should be the 21st through the 25th. But she's started all signs so early, and her condition seems more like that of Farah who always foals early rather than Dusty who foals late.

Plus, we didn't raise her and while she is very sweet now and loves attention, there's no way of knowing how she will act with a foal or in the middle of foaling. Will we be able to assist if necessary. Just a worry wart I think. I sure do thank you for the prayers though.

Those all seem like normal worries to me. Doesn't make the time go faster or easier while you wait, though.

You know we're here praying for the best, and eager for news... :~D

Yes, if she doesn't wait awhile, although now she's only about 10-12 days early if she foals so it's better every day.

Got another picture for ya. I took Bluebell to be bred yesterday and the stallion we're breeding her to was out in the pasture with his mares, but he had this guy up at the house to breed him to some different mares so he used him to tease Bluebell to see if she'd stand. I think he's fairly young, but he's very tall. He's a little lanky and has the longest neck I've ever seen outside of a Saddlebred, but I think he's pretty...

Yeah, just playing with the bit will cause him to pop his shoulder out, and he'll follow his shoulder. I know because I have the same problem. (All The Time) with one of the horses that I ride. When you're tracking to the right, use your outside leg to push him around the circle, making him follow it and making him use his corners. If you use your inside leg and inside rein, his outside should will pop out and he'll have no choice but to follow it, therefore that's why he goes wide on the circle and falls out of it.
Does that make any sense?

Oh yeah! You should've seen the show he put on for Bluebell. He didn't stop calling to her from the time he walked up. It was really funny because when I told the guy I wanted to take his picture, he wanted to brush his mane a little bit so he took him over and tied him to his trailer while he did it. Well, this Romeo could see his own reflection in the glass of the tack room door and was talking to HIMSELF! LOL!!

I didn't do it this time.

He said this year he hasn't treated any cases, nor heard of any local outbreaks... that some years, there's an exposure at a show or a barn and it spreads all over, but not right now.

He also said to be serious about immunity for it, it really needs to be given every six months. He said he wouldn't worry about it in my circumstance where they seldom have contact with other horses, just passing on trail.

Whatta babe!

That's what Bluebell thought! She was like "Bring it ON, Baby!", but she got to have a rendezvous with her real beau later on that evening. I wanted to stay and watch, but I don't think the owner was comfortable with it, so I went on home. I guess he didn't want to watch "PonyPorn" with a woman he didn't know all that well. It could be kinda awkward I guess, but most breeders don't give it a second thought.

Oh - there was one method of controlling or preventing heat cycles in mares that the vet said he'd look into if we wanted, if Cyn's heat cycles continue to be disruptive to the peace... Putting a marble in her uterus! It's a lot easier and better than giving hormones.

I looked it up on Google to see what's said about it.

C. Intrauterine placement of Glass Marbles is a method of estrous cycle manipulation that has been used for a number of years in Europe and the Middle East and introduced to the many US veterinarians at the 2001 AAEP convention by Dr Gary Nie. It involves the placement of a sterile, 30 to 35 mm diameter glass marble through the cervix and into the uterus within 24 hrs after ovulation. It is effective in increasing the interovulatory interval from 21 days to approximately 90 days for about 40 to 70% of mares. It seems to work by causing the uterus to react to the marble as if it were an embryo. Accordingly, the CL is then maintained for a substantially extended period. During estrus, the marble can be removed by a veterinarian who is experienced in transrectal uterine palpation. The veterinarian will manipulate the marble, per rectum, though the uterus and out through an open cervix. No adverse effects of this treatment have been reported.
