The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread FIVE

*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Oh. Well let ecurbh or the vet do it then. Passing out under a horse isn't a good thing:') OSHA has people rules regarding not re- capping needles anymore. There is a brand out now that retracts the needle while in the skin. I saw them at a rep exhibit. I expect before too long they may have injectable ones too.

Oh my:), well better leave it to the vet then. I was pretty leary the first time I had to do it,and it was a have too situation. Antibiotics everyday for a week. I wasn't hauling the horse to the vet everyday for that.

Anyway, I remember, I stuck it in and jumped back gasping for breath saying "oh, oh, oh", :) the horse just kind of turned and looked at me like "what??" with this syringe hangin off his neck:) I didn't know to stick the needle in then attach the syringe. Knock on wood, I've never had a horse do much more then toss it's head up once, when I've given shots.

Your horse was good. I talked with the vet about ways to treat her so she doesn't go into heat. There are ways, all expensive :~\

And Bay has days where he's not as up as he was today, just like all of us, I suppose. But usually his feet do touch the ground once in awhile. He was all fired up today.

With Rusty my leg is pretty much on him, just no pressure. Harley seems to respond even just to a touch. I've never rode like that and have actually been wondering if a horse can be "too" light sided. Is he? Should I be correcting this? How?

You have to have ~some~ leg on them to stay in the saddle properly I would think.

I had implants put into Belle a couple of times to stop her cycles. They worked. I don't recall that it was all that expensive tho. But that was when I used the vet that died and he was cheaper on everything. I think it was like $30 dollars, and the implanted lasted 6 months.

It depends, In English, you ride very close contact with your leg on the horse. But I've seen Western riders who ride more straight legged with their lower leg totally off the horse. I had one horse, the black Arab that I showed in multiple events, that I rode that way. He was super light sided. So is my pony.

It's good to have them not so touchy, because if they lurch, you're naturally going to clamp onto them to stay on, but some are just more sensitive. You might want to consider not riding him in spurs, he may be too touchy and apprehensive about them to be calm. Unless there are times you do need them to get him through obstacles he doesn't like.

Many horses do have a good and bad side in the lope, and nothing gets them over that better than practice. One side feels nice, one side feels clumsy, and they often resist circling on the off side, they just don't feel as coordinated. It's one situation where a round pen might be beneficial, just because the hard barrier will keep them in the circle without them just bending at the neck and running out of the circle. He'll never get under himself doing that.

UUMMMMM...sorry:)

My spurs are kid size very short shank, I really have to turn my ankle in to get him with them. I basically just use them for just what you said, and obstacle that he needs encouragement on.

It's more from my knee down that I am having to really pay attention to. I'm figuring it will make me a better rider, improve my skills.

Today I got some fairly good circles out of him going to the right. I stopped after a good one. Hopefully he'll catch on.

Some kind of barrier that prevents him from thinking his track should be anywhere outside of the circle might help.

Will he lope nice both directions on the lunge? Or does he run outside on the off direction there too?

Log cabin packages are mainly just the frame. It should have somewhere on the site, everything that is included in the price. However, we found one recently that included EVERYTHING. You had to do your own dry wall if any and of course plumbing, air and electric but you could either do that yourself or hire a contractor to do it. I will look in my records and freepmail you the details when I have more time, i need to go scrub a pool out right now!
We are very interested in them too, we know that we can do most of the work so that wouldnt be a deterrent, and some of the packages are great prices. I;ll get back in touch with you about this........ : D

You know.. I forgot to mention that I called Cyn's prior owner, to find out if she'd had West Nile shots before, because you have to do a double shot a month apart the first time.

She was not all that curious about her. I can't imagine not being curious, even if I sold a horse I really wanted to get rid of... I'd be intensely curious to see how they were doing... "So... how's that pony working out for you and your child? Any hospitalizations necessary?"

Poor thing, I can imagine how startled she was. I wouldn't want somebody sneaking up on me and popping me in the butt with a needle. I'd probably jump 10 feet too! Then I'd be pretty pissed off. ;o)

Yeah, I can't imagine her not being curious either, especially since she raised her with a bottle. If it was me, it'd be like my own child.

Oh - she lives her whole life being startled by things. "Booo!" Panic. ;~D

I can't say what Bay's problem was, he's usually more amicable and easy going. But maybe when you are a 24 year old horse you start getting nervous about vets coming at you with purple juice ;~D

I started to tell her that she was working out great and looked good, but I got the feeling she wasn't interested in hearing any more. She was just kindof flat.

I just hate it when people act that way. Like you're just wasting their time. It's rude. They could at least feign some interest for politeness sake.
