My spurs are kid size very short shank, I really have to turn my ankle in to get him with them. I basically just use them for just what you said, and obstacle that he needs encouragement on.
It's more from my knee down that I am having to really pay attention to. I'm figuring it will make me a better rider, improve my skills.
Today I got some fairly good circles out of him going to the right. I stopped after a good one. Hopefully he'll catch on.

Some kind of barrier that prevents him from thinking his track should be anywhere outside of the circle might help.
Will he lope nice both directions on the lunge? Or does he run outside on the off direction there too?
