*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

She just sprang. She was standing pretty quiet, and he caught her off guard. He stuck the needle in her, and she coiled and leaped into the air and landed about 10 feet in front of me. Then she stood there, trembling.. the needle still in her. Even with the leap, she was better than Bay, who wouldn't stop.

Glad your ride went good. Is it your hands or your leg or both that you have to scale back on?

It sounds like your crew is in really good shape :) I kinda think Bay will be around for a good while too.

Nothing happening here yet. I am kind of worried about BamBam, her bag is tremendously swollen and she's waxed up again. Just praying for a safe delivery and a healthy foal.

I can't believe I'm eating lunch and posting this but maybe that is why Sarah Lee tearing so bad still. My trainer was telling me that they have a small hole inside the nostrils for drainage when I was cleaning gunk out.

I don't recall if this topic has been discussed, but I'm surprised your vet gives shots in the butt. All the vets around here give in the neck. One of them told me the reason he gave in the neck is because if a horse does got to jumping around, the needle can get broke. If it is in the butt, he said gravity would pull it in further, rather then pull it out???? I guess that would depend on where in the butt it is given.

I would rather give in the neck because I feel I have more control standing at their heads then at their butt.

When you give shots, what is your preference?

Becky

Could be... if your vet comes back out have him flush her out.

Bay's just had goopy eyes lately, not green like he's sick, but just runny. And they shouldn't be.

I don't like to give them at all, I'm too squeemish with needles to punch it in hard enough. That's why the vet does them for me ;~D

I've seen him give shots in both places.

We're praying for that too... What worries you... that she's been bagged up so long?

I saw the post about pastures. I'm going to turn her out this evening after the last dose of antibiotics. You can tell that she really wants to be with other horses.

I think mostly my legs. He responds so quick and so much with the lightest touch. I'm mostly haveing trouble loping circles to the right. It seems he tends to drift out of the circle, so I tap, tap with the bit and he just bends his neck rather moving back into the circle, I think because I'm so right handed I'm pressing with my right leg, not even realizeing and that is pushing him out of the circle. He also seems to speed up at points in the circle. I'm trying to make note if I'm squeezing or bumping him. I know most of his problems are me:), I've seen him rode by people with better skills then me and he is so perfect. I'm just a lowly trail rider:). I know the cues and techniques, just haven't quite got it all down good. And Rusty was not as reponsive, so I got use to giveing strong cues, and not having to worry if I bumped or squeezed at the wrong time.

Does this make sense:)

Think of it this way. If you don't "dart" the needle in , it hurts more.

I've known horsemen with different preferences on where to give shots, Some preferring the neck and some the butt. I didn't ask him why he prefers either way. I know he's done them in the neck other times, I think he moves around.

One consideration I've seen make ~some~ difference is when they do the 8 way that has tenanous in it, I've seen them get so sore in the neck that they can't reach down to eat and drink.

If you have brand new needles, it dosen't take anything to get them in. You don't have to "punch it in hard:)" I never use the needle that for giving the shot that I used to draw in the meds to the syringe with, and I never use a needle more then twice. It's amazing how that makes such a difference.

I am just not good with needles. I actually passed out when I had to have an IV put in my hand.

She was a dream. Didn't flick an ear for her shots.

That's our Cyn! Bay circled around for a couple minutes like a hot snot with the needle in his butt...

That our Bay-man! When we gave shots to the pony, she did this

Heh, ~that's~ our pony!

Glad it went well. And good to hear that he thinks Bay is doing great!

I've seen horses have sore necks after a shot too. I had a friend whose horse got so bad she took him to the vet, I went with her. He said that happens when the shot is given in the wrong place. He gave us a lesson on where to give shots, and neither of us ever had trouble with sore necks again.

Do you ride with your leg resting on him all the time, or with your leg off of him?
