Guys, I am rather new here. So what is a "ping"?
Sniff???
OK, a quick check with your in-forum posts looks pretty good, not obvious troll tracks, so let me say 'howdy' and 'Welcome to FreeRepublic.
'Ping' is a way for someone to put a 'marker' in a thread really quickly, so they can come back and find it easier. When you do that, the thread will show up in your "my comments" portion, which you access by the Ping tab at the top. It's a listing of what threads have been specifically addressed to you, or ones that you have replied to. Sometimes, someone you know here on FR will put your name in the To: field at the top, to alert you to a thread you might be interested in. Then it shows up as "New Posts To You"
Clear as mud yet?
Oops, see what I did there, I clicked on the Reply button to my previous message, instead of one of yours, so the message I typed didn't get addressed to you specifically, like this one is, so you didn't get 'pinged' to the previous message, just this one. Now that your interest is piqued, you'll have to look at the message above this one, to see what I'm rambling on about....
It's a command that sends an echo request to a network host.
Out of curiosity, why is there no entry for the Viking Kitties on that?
I know Pong was a digital game from the 1970's

Thanks for the info.
And thanks for the affirmation of my untrollness, too!
Ha, ha.

NOW tell me why viking kitties are funny, what they mean and why they weren't on the definitions pages posted above?
Are they new or old?
Trust me, you really don't want to know. :-)
Um, that's why I was asking why there's no mention of them. I'm kind of new and don't know the history. Viking kitties (at least the associated pictures) are inherently funny; at least to me, I'm a cat person.
As for the rest, I have no idea. I was kind of hoping someone would point me at a post with that info. :-P
Ping is a basic Internet program that lets you verify that a particular IP address exists and can accept requests. The verb ping means the act of using the ping utility or command. Ping is used diagnostically to ensure that a host computer you are trying to reach is actually operating. If, for example, a user can't ping a host, then the user will be unable to use the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to send files to that host. Ping can also be used with a host that is operating to see how long it takes to get a response back. Using ping, you can learn the number form of the IP address from the symbolic domain name.
Loosely, ping means "to get the attention of" or "to check for the presence of" another party online. Ping operates by sending a packet to a designated address and waiting for a response. The computer acronym (for Packet Internet or Inter-Network Groper) was contrived to match the submariners' term for the sound of a returned sonar pulse.
Ping can also refer to the process of sending a message to all the members of a mailing list requesting an ACK (acknowledgement code). This is done before sending e-mail in order to confirm that all of the addresses are reachable
You think you're soooooo smart! PING is the past tense of PONG!!!
:}
Sheeeesh, an someone said FReepers are smart....actually, 'ping' is something you do in the bathroom...
Have a FReeperful day!
Ping used to hang out with us at FR and we'd give him stale bread crusts by the pond. Then he got that gig with Aflac and he won't return our calls anymore.

I think it's that plastic thing at the end of your shoelaces. |
