The Hobbit Hole XX - And take the hidden paths that run...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 03/05/2005 11:51:13 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And take the hidden paths that run...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

So true.

A dog doesn't care what you look like, what clothes you wear, how much money you have or if you even have a job at all. They'll sit with you in a cardboard box on a street corner as long as they can be with you.

Wonderful creatures. God really blessed us with them.

OK, now I'm really outta here...

"Legion," Foster said. I turned. A beer bottle was hanging in the air in front of my face. I put a hand up fast and the bottle slapped my palm.

"Not a bad set of reflexes for a man whose adventures are all behind him." Foster said.

Some of my favorite imagery in all literature, I've decided, for the moment.

Oooh, that's a good one! "Trace of Memory", yes?

Laumer had this incredibly dry wit that comes through in his narrative now and then. It's almost an English humor. It's also very subtle and if you blink, you'll miss it. I love it.

...the business with the folding chair...

Don John, who is a villain just because...

"...but if ever the sensible Benedick bear it, pluck off the bull's horns and set them in my forehead: and let me be vilely painted; and in such great letters as they write Here is good horse to hire, let them signify under my sign, --Here you may see Benedick, the married man."

"A Trace of Memory," right. I doubt if Laumer ever realized his full potential. After reading "Legions of Space," I'm convinced he could have gone anywhere he wanted to as a writer. Going to have to get some more of his stuff.

Sometimes one needs a villain who is a villain just because!

I like Benedick's profession of love and devotion where he then offers to do Beatrice any service - only to have her demand he kill Claudio.

And of course Dogberry, who invented the malapropism long before it gained its name.

Yes, indeed. He really was cut down in his prime. Stroke, I believe. Another ten years and he'd have been among the greats, rather than relegated to the B-list.

Used bookstores are a great place to pick up his work! Try some of the Retief stories - you ought to be able to read one collection's worth online at Baen.com, if you are able to read stories online. I know some people hate it.

Oy. Dogberry.

If I'd been Verges I'd 'a'...I don't know what. But something quite uncomedic :)

"We would rather sleep than talk..."
"I do not know how that should offend."*

*Or words to that effect.

Dogberry was fun to read in Shakespeare class, and he doesn't appear in any scenes with Beatrice so I didn't have to choose between characters. Not that I always got to do Beatrice; we had about seven girls in the class and three female parts, maximum. Plus Mom taught and she didn't want to favor me. Or pair me with the only guy who was actually capable of reading Benedick's lines too often since I already had a crush on him ;-)

It's fun. Bring the DVD? I have a copy too, and there's limited time for watching anything, but who knows?

Good night, everyone.

Oh, I bought a bicycle. 3-speed, not much to look at, $10 at a yard sale.

That is all.

LOL!! They look like they're standing back there going "What's up with THIS guy?"

I'm glad you got to have breakfast with Rosie and Margaret. Aren't they just the sweetest gals? Now, until ShootMoot, they're the only ones who have met both you and Ex Gee Eye!

Great pic Talon. If you take a shower, we'll stand closer to you for the Shootmoot pictures.

Or you can just stand with g'nad.
