The Hobbit Hole XX - And take the hidden paths that run...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 03/05/2005 11:51:13 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And take the hidden paths that run...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

To each her own! I don't like most veggies and I really don't like "wet" veggies like boiled spinach or cole slaw.

Collard greens and fried corn and baked chicken and dressing and potato salad, with a scratch layer yellow cake with buttercream frosting, coconut, and pecans ...!

Summer Sunday dinner at my house was special!

Oh, mamma, ain't that Texas cookin' somethin'?
Oh, mamma, stop yo' belly and backbone bumpin'!
Oh, mamma ain't that Texas cookin' good?
Oh, mamma eat it everyday if I could!

I love spinach, steamed or raw - you just need to put some vinegar on it and eat it with some meat and olive oil - can't miss. All the good things vetetables do for you, they won't do unless you ingest some fat with them, I think.

Three-mustard potato salad?

Spicy blanched green beans?

Buttered white rice?

Hot cornbread dripping with butter?

Fried corn (though I would have to recreate my mamma's recipe)?

Baked apples?

Twice-baked potatoes?

Girlfriend, I'm gonna find some veggie thing you can eat that I can cook!

I know! Smothered potatoes! Slice potatoes thin, like potato chips, fry them till they're soft on the inside and crisp on the outside, sautee onions and garlic until tender, and then cook 'em together until the potatoes are soft.

That was my daddy's Saturday morning breakfast dish! Served with sausage --- sometimes he would toss the bulk sausage in there! Oh, that would wake me up and get me through the day! Delish!

Nice memory! Thanks!

One of the very best salads I ever had was sauteed steak slices on a bed of spinach with bacon dressing and fried red onion rings.

I could have eaten that every day for a week!

And I think you're right about veggies ... they do taste best with a sauce or animal fat or something on 'em!

Carrot and raisin salad?

Waldorf salad? But no celery ... I dislike celery.

Cornbread's good! That's no vegetable... I could eat rice every meal including breakfast, fried corn, maybe... Dad makes something like "smothered potatoes" only they're little chunks and we call them "homefries", apparently they're a dish he learned to like in Germany.

But notice, all those are more starch than veg. It's the super-healthy things I don't like.

<snicker>

You come on down here ... Southern seafood is a bit different than what you Northwesterners are accustomed to. And we'll get you some Tex-Mex food in San Antonio ... bean cups at Teka Molino!

Ah, rice!!!

One of the first things I learned to cook on top of the stove was rice! Rice and pinto beans doctored up with browned ground beef, with cornbread on the side?

We gonna get a big ol' sausage
A big ol' plate of ranch-style beans
I could eat the heart of Texas!

The one piece of cooking equipment I bought myself, new, was a rice steamer. It does veggies too, but once you've grown used to how good rice tastes from a steamer, you can't eat it out of a pot any more.

Hmm, we'll have to negotiate about the beans but the rest sounds great.

I just got this email from Jerry. His bunch got the first shipment of Camillus "Black Ops" knives. He'll get more, once he chooses from our expanded "product line".

GOOD MORNING RICHARD....
YES I DID GET YOUR SHIPMENT AND THANK YOU FOR IT. I FEAR THAT I MIGHT HAVE
SLIPPED UP IF YOU DID NOT RECIEVE A THANK YOU FROM ME HOWEVER IN MY DEFENCE
I THOUGHT THAT I HAD DONE SO. WE HAVE BEEN WORKING SHORTHANDED SINCE
DECEMBER AND IT HAS PROVED DIFFICULT TO KEEP UP WITH EVERYTHING. I EXPECT A
NEW PERSON TO JOIN THE DEPARTMENT THIS WEEKEND WHILE I GO ON R&R SO THAT
OUGHT TO HELP OUT.

THE SHEATH KNIFES WERE ABSOLUTLY GREAT. I WANTED TO
KEEP ONE MYSELF BUT INSTEAD I GAVE THEM AWAY TO SOME SPECIAL OPS GUYS WHO
ARE WORKING IN A REMOTE OUTLAYING AREA. THEY REPORTED BACK IN THE OTHER DAY
AND HAD GLOWING PRAISE FOR THEM. DID YOU ADD THE GROOVES IN THE HANDLE LIKE
THEY SAID OR DID THEY COME THAT WAY? THEY HAVE BEEN FIELD TESTED AND FOUND
JUST RIGHT FOR THE BUSH. THESE KNIFES ARE A WONDERFUL WAY OF THANKING THE
TROOPS FOR A JOB WELL DONE AND I THANK YOU FOR THEM . JERRY
