The Hobbit Hole XX - And take the hidden paths that run...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 03/05/2005 11:51:13 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

And take the hidden paths that run...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Doesn't entropy sort of suggest time isn't infinite? I mean, what's the point of time without anything happening?

For similar reasons, "eternity" has always seemed to me to be more of the absense of time than just an infinite amount of time.

Time should be as infinite as space, since it's just another dimension.

But is space truly infinite, either? Isn't the universe supposed to start collapsing in on us soon, like the next fifty billion years or so?

From our perspective, is there a actual difference between "really really big" and "infinite", anyway?

Ooops... glad he'll recover from it without expected ongoing trouble...

Well now, that's a good question.

From our perspective, is there a actual difference between "really really big" and "infinite", anyway?

Probably not.

So if the universe starts to collapse, does time run backwards? Could we do it all over again?

I seem to recall somesome saying the universe would NOT collapse.

Eh, my own view is, the science of cosmology is in need of a major overhaul. They keep having to bend the theories to the breaking point to account for new observations. Time to start fresh, I say.

Either that or stop making new observations ;-)

Zathras: "Cannot run out of time. There is infinite time. You are finite, Zathras is finite, this… is wrong tool."

Zathras, certainly one of the most whacked-out characters in a science fiction series. :)

"No-one ever listens to Zathras. Quite mad, they say. It is good that Zathras does not mind. He's even grown to like it. Oh yes."

Heh. I think Zathras is the most grounded character in a science fiction series.

Here's my next stab at a Hobbit Hole logo for knives. This is a JPG file, but I also have it in TIFF, which is scaleable, and works with the laser engraver. It could also be used for letterhead, etc.

If anybody wants a copy, please freepmail me. Comments are welcome, especially if I take this in tomorrow for engraving on our remaining knives.

If anybody mistakes the script for arabic, their eyesight is too poor to let them serve in the military.

Thanks very much for the news about RC. Sounds like he will be back to normal soon. He'll probably become a fairly accurate weather forecaster as a result.

the atlas will help us figger where there's a decent sized town to stop in

You could mark the locations of the Motel 6, or whatever other inexpensive motels there are along the way (that allow the kitties), and you'd be all set! You'd know by looking at the atlas where a good place to stop would be!

Well, that's what he gets for jumping out of a perfectly good airplane! LOL! No, really, I'll be praying for him to get better real soon, so he can do some more jumping, if that's what he wants to do!
