New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, |

Still round the corner there may wait |

Home is behind, the world ahead, |
64 and sunny here! It feels like spring...
Afternoon all. Just gettin' back online. Felt so bad last night that I stayed home from church this morning.
But, we bought an air purification system yesterday, so we'll see if that helps. Wife says she could already tell I was sleeping better. Okay, so she actually said I didn't snore. But that's progress.
The Ballad Of the Alamo
Written by Dimitri Tiomkin & P.F. Webster, performed by Marty Robbins
In the southern part of Texas, in the town of San Antone
There's a fortress all in ruins that the weeds have overgrown
You may look in vain for crosses and you'll never see a-one
But sometimes between the setting and the rising of the sun
You can hear a ghostly bugle, as the men go marching by
You can hear them as they answer to that roll call in the sky.
Colonel Travis, Davy Crockett, and a hundred eighty more
Captain Dickinson, Jim Bowie, present and accounted for.
Back in 1836, Houston said to Travis
"Get some volunteers and go, fortify the Alamo."
Well the men came from Texas, and from old Tennessee
And they joined up with Travis, just to fight for the right to be free.
Indian scouts with squirrel guns, men with muzzle-loaders
Stood together, heel and toe, to defend the Alamo.
"You may ne'er see your loved ones," Travis told them that day
"Those who want to can leave now, those who fight to the death let 'em stay."
In the sand he drew a line, with his army sabre
Out of a hundred eighty five, not a soldier crossed the line
With his banners a-dancin', in the dawn's golden light
Santa Anna came prancing, on a horse that was black as the night.
Sent an officer to tell Travis to surrender
Travis answered with a shell, and a rousing rebel yell
Santa Anna turned scarlet, "Play 'Deguello'!" he roared
"I will show them no quarter, every one will be put to the sword!"
One hundred and eighty five, holding back five thousand
Five days, six days, eight days, ten, Travis held and held again
Then he sent for replacements, for his wounded and lame
But the troops that were coming, never came, never came, never came...
Twice he charged and blew recall, on the fatal third time
Santa Anna breached the wall, and he killed 'em, one and all
Now the bugles are silent, and there's rust on each sword
And the small band of soldiers... lie asleep in the arms of the Lord...
In the southern part of Texas, near the town of San Antone
Like a statue on his pinto rides a cowboy all alone
And he sees the cattle grazing where a century before
Santa Anna's guns were blazing and the cannons used to roar
And his eyes turn sorta misty, and his heart begins to glow
And he takes his hat off slowly... To the men of Alamo.
To the thirteen days of glory
At the seige of Alamo...
Glad you're not snoring, at least. Hope you feel well soon - nothing quite like the first few days of health after being truly ill.
Seeds are planted. Game is about to start. Wish I had a charcoal grill.
Wish I had a garden.
So far I have half a box up. Need to get some more dirt for it and set up at least 3 more before last frost (end of April.)
Someday I will have a house with a yard, and a garden. And a dog. Hopefully also a husband.
Do you get more sun in the new apartment?
A bit, since there are windows on both sides. Not sure that a balcony-garden is feasible but I just might try. I'll have to find out what's plantable in late March in Colorado. It might be too late for some stuff.
Hi! Just popping in long enough to say that Halvah is, as I thought, just fine. The vet finally called and left a message! She did say something about pH levels that I take it means she really should have a different food (something to do with crystals being present in her urine, which I'm sure you're all very interested in...), but the new food I got her should help with that and I'd been feeding a cheaper brand than usual...so I think that's nothing to worry about. All's well with the world! Except that they have to keep getting that eye ointment for a bit, but it's working better than the drops did, so no big deal.
Speaking of gardens...I'm thinking of trying to bring my hugh philodendron. It's lived through two apartments, a stint at the house, and then here, plus one period where Mom set it outside and it got forgotten for a few months. It cannot be killed. I should name it Rasputin...except it's rather pleasant. I don't see why it couldn't survive a few day trip, though it might be a little unhappy for a day or two afterwards. Is there anywhere to hang a plant?
Are we allowed grills on the balcony? I can't remember if you grilled last year or not! Guess I wasn't payin' enough attention. I flunk.
The other reason the atlas will be handy is that we aren't necessarily planning each night's stop down to the last detail...the atlas will help us figger where there's a decent sized town to stop in. I don't think I'll print anything but the overall route from MapQuest or MapPoint.
We can always hammer in a hook in your bedroom. I'm sure Rasputin will fit right in. As long as it doesn't kill Spidey (what else to call a spider plant?).
No grills on the balconies, unfortunately :-(
Glad to hear about the kitties!
Rasputin hasn't killed any other plants, that I know of. I WILL, however, likely have to sever some of his limbs in getting him out of here. Grabbed onto the curtain rods, he has.
Or you could just buy potted vegetables at Home Depot. WalMart and even grocery stores have them sometimes. Bush varieties are probably your best bet for growing in pots.
I had hot peppers of some sort that I grew successfully, though I didn't really have quite enough sun or heat. It'd work there for sure, I'd think!
Those are pretty AND useful...
Or green peppers...
