Just fried a MADD funraiser's mind
Posted on 02/11/2005 7:02:58 PM PST by Still Thinking
A fundraiser from Dial America just called me to regale me with what a noble deserving organization MADD was. She asked me if I thought it was a tragedy that someone was killed evey 30 minutes by a drunk driver, and I told her the statistic was bogus and that the NHTSA was in bed with MADD which is improper since they are funded with tax dollars. She seemed confused, but merely went on to state that since 48 people a day were killed by drunk drivers they still had a lot of work to do. I reminded her that that was the same statistic I just told her I knew wasn't true, and the conversation went downhill from there.
She literally couldn't seem to comprehend that someone didn't think MADD was the best thing since sliced bread. I finally had to hang up.

You should have told her that you'll give her a contribution if she starts a campaign to get rid of bunkbeds, which kill thousands...and pools, which kill thousands--oh, heck, pools don't kill, it's the WATER that kills, sooooo....

Did you ask what she was wearing?
Usually they hang up on me.......

No, but if demand took that big a hit, prices should fall, enabling me to buy more!

MADD is the classic example of an organization which must keep amping fear (and, in MADD's case, reducing blood alcohol levels via America's state legislatures to the point where a glass of wine becomes illegal) in order to maintain its very existence. I think when their founder got picked up for DUI, they lost just a little luster.

I wasn't just trying to get rid of her or I'd have hung up as soon as I knew who she was. I was trying to jump start the brain of a sheeple unaccustomed to questioning the latest nanny state wet dream conjured up by her bettors.

Like many well-intentioned special-interest groups, they've overstayed their welcome, by a long-shot.
When they started, there were repeat drunk drivers that were literally getting away with murder. Now we're at the point where a few drinks at dinner, and perfect driving, will still get you pulled over and thrown in jail for a 0.08 BAC, while some 85 year old, half dead person, is ramming into crowds of people in Santa Monica.
I'm now beginning to think that DUIs are just another way of collecting money from drivers, much like the toll road system that our lovely governor is shoving down our throats here in Texas. (at least with DUIs, there are ways to avoid it)

I see you're interested in the "micro" view of the economy. Or is that "microbrew"?

Yeah, I'd be willing to take up some of the slack.
We've all got to do our part!

Don't waste your time. They are just phone bank operators paid to read a script. Feel sorry for them. If you want to have some fun, call MADDs central office, pose as a reporter, and start asking them some real questions.

I finally had to hang up. I usually slur to them that I'm really drunk right now and don't give a damn.

I know what you mean. The other thing she said that almost made me choke but which I didn't get a chance to challenge was that MADD was a non-profit organization. Bull crap. Well, OK, maybe in the legal IRS definition of the term. But all their staffers come in to the office, work all day, and collect a paycheck at the end of the week. That's not "non-profit" in any ethical sense, at least not to the degree where you should be using it to entice people to send in money they worked hard for. Especially when that money will be used to further erode their freedoms and perpetuate a scam. I did mention to her how the founder, who is no longer with the organization, said that they "have become far more neo-prohibitionist than she ever envisioned".

Yea, it really did happen. Several years ago, I believe. It was hilarious.

I bet MADD were quite irate, even a little miffed, if not downright mad about that! ;-)
