Wedding gift etiquette question
2-3-2005 | Trust but Verify

Posted on 02/03/2005 9:38:09 AM PST by Trust but Verify

My husband's cousin is marrying this month in a private ceremony with only immediate family present. The couple is planning to have an official reception in June. My question is, when do we give the wedding gift? At the time of the vows, or at the time of the reception. If at the reception, how should we acknowledge the the marriage now?

With such a small wedding, why don't you ask them which they prefer--a gift sooner or later?

I say he gets creative, have the lobster holding the flowers and gift certificate in each claw, and present it atop Sean Hannity's new book!

Set up as the centerpiece at the bridal table?

At the reception, of course.

Send the thank you note first. That'd be even more right!

Hi. I would suggest Maine for your honeymoon. I know it's one of the most liberal states in the country now, but it is beautiful. Here is a link for a place where my parents have stayed frequently and they love it. I'm from Maine originally, so I am a little biased.

Rocktide Inn.

We went to Sandals all-inclusive in St Lucia last September. We stayed at the Halcyon and will be staying at the Grande next visit.

After Hurricane Ivan went through, it was awesome! (we have a 3 day comp for our anniversary visit coming up)

Take a cruise - beautiful scenery, no worries about meals, lots of time to relax if you want it, lots of music, dancing it you want it. It's simply the best vacation!

That does look nice and for an august wedding, just perfect! they could have fires at nite in the fireplace. I vote for wine country first and Maine second. We went to Florida in a 10 year old car we borrowed and 200 bucks my father gave us and had a good time.

You should send the wedding gift ahead of time. In my opinion, it is bad form to show up at a wedding or reception with wedding gift in hand. There is a reason that registries will ship directly to the couple ahead of the ceremony.

My Mother will give me a set of silver and china when I get married, and I am really looking forward to it. Unfortunately, I'm 33 and still unmarried. I have asked her for it, but she says I have to get married first. I'd love to receive silver or china. I have to find a man, first, though.

Oh dear, silver is forever and sometimes men arent! I just gave mine to my daughter and the other two daughters have grandmother silver. They love it.

My daugthter had two wedding gifts stolen when people brought them to her reception. We only found out because both people asked me why she hadn't sent them thank you notes. We then had to go thru the invite list and see if anyone hadn't brought presents and discreetly inquire if they had. It was horrible. One gift was a pair of valuable antique silver candlesticks. Apparently this happens alot. Dont bring gifts to the wedding whatever you do!

BERMUDA....BERMUDA...BERMUDA..or Cayman Islands.....or St. Lucia. BTW did I mention BERMUDA?

Rent a quaint cottage at one of the cottage resorts, private, within walking distance to the beach, they usually have a pool and a great restaurant on site. The upside to Bermuda is that they don't need to have an "all inclusive" resort because the entire island is SAFE!

Many of the islands have all inclusive resorts because they want to keep the tourists away from the murdering island residents.

Always check the U.S. Government site for travel advisories prior to making any reservations. This is the info. that travel agencies won't tell you.

IMO....since the vows are really the most important part of the wedding....give the gift now.
