Wedding gift etiquette question
2-3-2005 | Trust but Verify

Posted on 02/03/2005 9:38:09 AM PST by Trust but Verify

My husband's cousin is marrying this month in a private ceremony with only immediate family present. The couple is planning to have an official reception in June. My question is, when do we give the wedding gift? At the time of the vows, or at the time of the reception. If at the reception, how should we acknowledge the the marriage now?

Doesn't really matter. Traditional etiquette says you have up until 1 year after the wedding to send a gift. I would simply send one now.

But breaking news with this? Oy! ;)

I'd say either one.
But why not now?

IMO, you have up to one year to send it after receiving an invitation or announcement. If you don't receive either, it's up to you if you want to send a gift at all.

If they are having the Reception four months after the Ceremony, it would seem a bag of Puffed Rice would be appropriate.

If you need honeymood ideas my dear, you may be too young unless you are talking about location, is that what you meant? I suggest the wine country of California, go see Sideways first. One of my daughters went there and loved it. One went to Hawaii and loved it till she got some terrible ringworm infection from sitting on sand. The third went to Europe on a budget and loved that too.

While you're at it, send me something. It's the right thing to do.

I would wait till later just to make sure the wedding "takes" and see where they are registered. You have a year and they might like getting the present later after the wedding and most of the thank yous are written.

Umm ya I was looking for location idea's. My first marriage we went to Europe and it was awful. Kinda fitting for a marriage that only lasted 3 years ;)

Another thing. DO NOT SEND KNIVES OR SCISSORS,,IT IS BAD LUCK. And I personally don't get silver engraved anymore since so many people divorce. And noone gives silver, china and crystal but people like me who are over 55,,kids don't seem to like it anymore.

This thread reminds me of that great scene in Bull Durham when all the guys were on the field and the coach came up and asked them why they were standing there and they said they didn't know what to do about a teammates wedding.

Does anyone remember that scene? I loved that movie, still do.

We don't want him turning gay on his honeymoon!!

I suggest wine country first. What month is the wedding? And what does the bride like?
