Newbie/Former DUer (Yeah, whatever, goodbye to you and your friends, ZOT!)
Me, Myself, and I

Posted on 01/18/2005 4:34:44 PM PST by SeanQuinn

Hi, my name is Sean Quinn. My original political philosophy was that of a moderate, then I creeped liberal, then joined DU. I had my fun there and became a donor (which I think's about to expire). I got a membership at FR, ORIGINALLY to just troll and to read as most DU folk do. After some serious post-election thinking and re-evaluating of my philosophy (a good issue for this is social security) I stopped going to DU. I started listening to 580 WDBO here in Orlando which advertises itself as "the conservative radio station". Thank the Lord, we don't get Air America here, so it's basically one of the few choices in talk radio. I heard Boortz (whom I love for his open-source talks as well as his political philosophy, yaay for linux) and then Hannity. The gentlemen I put down as a "rightie conservative" before now started to make some serious sense.

So, I say, HI. Though I have an account at DU of the same name, I won't be going back there. I'm pretty sure that I've found a home for me here at FR.

If you have any questions, comments, etc. please contact me on AIM at QuinnieDaPooh921 or of course, as always, post them below.

I'm a bit of a neocon, in the extent of taking it literally. I am a new conservative. I hope to once be known as a paleocon.

What I'd like to know is where to find a good guide or some hints for a newbie like myself. Is there a guide? What's Smoky Backroom and GOP Club for? Stuff like that. Thank you dearly.

-S. Quinn

Welcome to FR and you'll feel SO much better, now that you've left THE DARK SIDE. :-)

There are several places that'll give you all the info you need, which I'm sure others have already sent you to. Be sure to read FR's archives,though...especially Alamo Girl's files. Afterward, you'll wonder just HOW on earth you ever were a Dem And poster to FR. :-)

I noticed her comment in the thread had been pulled, so I checked the user profile..

http://www.freerepublic.com/~Jen2000

And it said the account is banned/suspended. When the mods zot a troll, it removes all their comments from the entire website as well as producing this message when you check their profile.

Your profile would be viewable at http://www.freerepublic.com/~Labrea, FYI. :)

And as long as you play by the rules, whether you're a newbie or a forum veteran, you'll avoid the wrath of mod ;)

How can you tell when someone is zotted?

When you look in the mirror, it'll look something like this.....

Yes you can, thanks for asking.

And thanks Terriergal for posting my pic of Rummy! I have a lot of Rumsfeld pics on my other computer which is going to the hospital to be fixed in a few days. Rather substantial crash.

He's the greatest, love him.

You haven't said anything about your transitional thought. IOW, "I know now" etc doesn't tell me much about what changed your mind, why do you 'know it now'?
Why did you believe what you did before? What are the politics of your parents? Do you all discuss news/politics at the dinner table?

Pleased to meet you Sean.

I was a member of an official DNC message board a few years ago. I let it be known that I was a GOP guy and that I was Conservative. I was relatively well received there but it got to be a bit much as there was no way to reach ANY sort of compromise on even the most moderate issue. So after a long time, I just left.

Now I will try to explain some of the questions you had and give you some advice I consider helpful.

The two sub groups that you listed are just forums that have specific interests.

I like your sentance about being a neocon but neocons are a distinct sub group that are not really Conservative at all. Paleocons are Conservatives stuck in the early twentieth century.

I have had hard leftists tell me that they know I am a Conservative but they have to warn me about the Neocon "threat". I tell them that there is nothing Neo about me and IMHO, every American of every political persuasion should oppose murdering psychos.

As for other posters, remember there are a lot of people here and some can be a little harsh but I think some of the flame wars I have had are much worse then anything you will see here. It's quite entertaining to see Right-Wingers wage intellectual war.

Welocme to the club.

Arioch7 out!

" Did you see last week's episode of Law and Order? Can you believe that cr@p??!" Bits and pieces..never saw the whole episode in whole.

" Why is the "party of tolerance" completely intolerant of pro-lifers?"

I've got not the slighest idea. I am pro-life and always have been, so that's just something I didn't bring up when I was at DU.

" Have you or your sister ever been bitten by a moose?"

Nope.

" What do you feel is drawing you to a more conservative way of thinking, besides the social security dilemma?"

The whole way of thinking. Not just the one dilemma, but the whole philosophy. I think conservatism just fits me better.

Wow, she was here just a second ago! Oh well, the mods must have used there super secret IP sniffer to tell it was a retread. (Oops, did I just let the cat out of the bag?)

This thread has undoubtedly attracted Mod attention, and you're explanation is surely correct. The trolls are getting more sophisticated and most of the idiots survive the first few days by pretending to be innocent.

If it's ever worked long-term, I'm doubtful. They all eventually pull the suicide bomber cord.

Sean, I don't think 1% of 13 year olds know who Churchill was, much less be able to quote them.

My seven year old can list all of our Presidents in order and recite for you a quote attributed to each President.

Having said that, I think 1/2 of 1% of 13 year olds knowing who Churchill was is closer to the mark!

Welcome to Free Republic!

It can be intimidating in the beginning. I had lurked here at least 2 years before I joined. I joined and then I made the mistake of posting something that was posted a million times before. Boy did I regret posting it. I felt like such a dope. I think of it as my initiation flame. It's a few years later and I'm still here. Free Republic is a great place with the best of people.

I'll second that, based on what the DU-ers have called us in the past, it is a pretty big swing for a few months. You've got the benefit of the doubt, though. You'll find that we, over here, are a bit more fair and hospitible than the dems tend to think. Welcome.
