"White Noise" -- don't believe the 'critics'
My Umptyplex | 1/17/05 | pabianice

With some time on my hands today I caught the flick "White Noise." The critics hated it. They are wrong. It's a tight, scary, fast-moving film with a lot of surprises.

I have no connection with the film and just wanted to set the record straight, especially after seeing part of the "Golden Globes" show last night, at which European critics (hah!) wet themselves over some really terrible films.

We need to start licensing movie critics! How much longer can this epidemic of bad reviews go unchecked?? We owe it to the children!

I went with a friend and couldn't leave because he drove me. Euros loving Dicaprio aside, 'The Aviator' was a great piece of filmmaking by one of America's best film makers.

"National Treasure" was also fun.

I loved that movie! It was quite refreshing to see a movie with a good, suspenseful plot, but no swearing and no gratuitous sex.

The critics trashed Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, and I laughed my butt off.

I liked Elektra, but it's not going to make a lot of money. If you consider Frank Miller to be one of the greatest writers in comicdom see it, it's very Miller. If you don't pay any attention to who's writing a comic 9or don't like Miller) don't bother, it's not your kind of movie.

W.N. was a good movie....had an element of Tin Foil Hat theory in it, but have read alot on EVP phenom since the 70's.

Scientists are big-time hands off this topic. Some stuff is hard to disprove: HERE for a non-politcal distraction sometime.

I thought H&K was pretty funny.

And Batman Begins might be good (depends on what they took from Miller's Year One), and Sin City (good year for Miller). Lots of offerings for 4 color fans.

Saw Dances with Wolves for the first time in i dont know how many years on A&E the other day.

That film was great when you view it from an American Indian perspective. It gives me a torn attitude between our invasion of their lands and our zeal for progress and liberty (for ourselves as former pheasants).

All in all I would say the Indians (or should I say Native American..ahem) were a highly intriguing group and mostly misunderstood. Their tribal and disorganized society gave them no chance to protect their lands.

I wonder what would have happened had the early settlers respected Indian lands rather than take it by force. Would we be as powerful of a nation as we are today?

(mind you I have no guilt over this event as I had no part of it. I am conscience of the fact that our country is where it is today because of brutality onto the Indians. It is a time in our history that bleeds of misunderstanding, selfishness and greed but happened nonetheless.)

OMG...talk about a sucky flick! BLECCH! The DVD is a coaster on my coffee table.

Yeah, saw it on cable. I'm surprised Connery sign up for that flick. Producer must've forked a big pile for Sean. I think the story must be a big with English schoolboy crowd. All the characters are Brits, except the young American secret service agent.(?!?) And Capt. Nemo as a devotee' of Kahli. Please.

With a few exceptions (LOTR comes to mind), you're perfectly safe avoiding the movies the critics love and going to the ones they trash. Sometimes they hate movies that normal people hate, like GIGLI, but it's pretty rare.

But they praised Napoleon Dynomite, and it was hillarious.

So what should the deciding factor be? Previews? You trust Hollywood marketing people more then objective outside sources? You can never tell if a movie is good from the trailer which is more like the movie they wish they had made. And good critics disagree all the time.

Captain Nemo was indeed an Indian (that is, if you read the original Mysterious Island.) He was originally Prince Dakkar, son of a rajah of the then independent territory of Bundelkund. In that sense, it wouldn't be a stretch to imagine Nemo as a devotee of Kali.

Batman Begins could be good, depending on Christian Bale.

I saw National Treasure with my 20 year-old son. We both enjoyed it. Even though Nicholas Cage is his arrogant self throughout the movie (I like him anyway!), it was a fun movie. The conspiracy theory plot was far-fetched but interesting.

I'd give it a B+ just because it was fun to watch. I would consider it a fun family film. I liked the fact that there wasn't any real gruesome violence and no sex scene! (When I go to a movie with my son, even if he is 20 years old, I'd rather not have to sit through a graphic sex scene!)

I watched it. The ending was .... wasn't.... didn't make much sense to me. Maybe I missed something,

There's a lot of if on that one. It would be nice to see good Batman movies again, always my favorite costumed nutter.

Kinda fitting that it took George Clooney to almost destroy the franchise. ;-)

The Ring 2 is coming soon. I can't wait.

And you are right about the ending of White Noise.

The Ring was the scariest movie I have seen.
