"White Noise" -- don't believe the 'critics'
My Umptyplex | 1/17/05 | pabianice

With some time on my hands today I caught the flick "White Noise." The critics hated it. They are wrong. It's a tight, scary, fast-moving film with a lot of surprises.

I have no connection with the film and just wanted to set the record straight, especially after seeing part of the "Golden Globes" show last night, at which European critics (hah!) wet themselves over some really terrible films.

We need to start licensing movie critics! How much longer can this epidemic of bad reviews go unchecked?? We owe it to the children!

The movie is making money and so far most of the people who I know that saw said it was a good movie.

I disagree. The ending sucked, and the rest seemed like some silly combo remake of The Ring and Final Destination... both better movies.

I don't care about critic's opinions anyway. Two of the most enjoyable movie experiences I've had over the past couple of years have been VAN HELSING and LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN.

I always listen to the critics. And do just the opposite. (Although they rightfully trashed 'Alexander'.)

speaking of pretty decent movies that go tbad reviews- I took my children to see the Polar Express- in 3-D AT THE IMAX - IT WAS GREAT!!!!!!!!

I can imagine it would have been much less interesting on a regular screen, but if you enjoy 3-D then the IMAX is fantastic!! The new technology make you feel like you are sitting right in the middle of things- during a snow storm scene I was squinting my eyes waiting for snow to hit me...

Thanks. I just emailed a friend about 20 minutes ago. We're planning to go to the movies. I suggested White Noise since I'd seen the movie review and I liked what I saw. I also read the brief summary in the local paper. Another one I liked based on the movie review was "National Treasure". Have you seen it? If so what do you think of it?

They critics aren't a monolith and rarely agree. What bad movies were being honored at the Golden Globes? The Aviator and Sideways were good stuff.

Your idea about licensing critics is something I've often thought about it. A film expert in America is described tautologically...a film critic is....someone who writes about movies. There are no certifications needed to et a job. Can youimagine a reputable publication hiring a literary critic who didn't know anything about literature? Most of them are glorified 'entertainment writers' and don't know who Dreyer and Ozu were. There should be a way to seperate the wheat from the chaff.

I saw the previews for this when I was at the theater to see Friday Night Lights. I literally crawled up into my seat I was so freaked out by the previews. I definitely want to see it.

Van Helsing was one of the worst experiences I've ever had in a movie theater. Torture.

I thought Sideways was terrific!

However, still don't understand the connection with the title of the movie. Anyone have an opinion?
