The Neverending Story

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)

I see there is a hurricane warning in effect for Brownsville. Stay safe!

I'm putting 2 new 5 ton heat & air cond units on my building. A guy from Kimberly Clark (we do work for them) that works for them and does their air cond work gave me a bid of $6,800 for the 2 installed. I'm pretty pleased with the price and everybody there says he does great work.

How's the woman thing going? :)

That's a good deal for units of that size.

I've gone on several dates the past two months. All pleasant, intelligent, reasonably attractive women. No real 'match' yet, though. So lots of dinners out, but not anything newsworthy yet. I am hoping to schedule a first date with another woman for this weekend that seems like a promising possibility.

You know, between John Paul Stevens, Clarence Thomas, and now John Roberts we'll have three Supreme Court Justices with seven first names.

You spend a lot of time thinking about these sorts of things? ;o)

Surprisingly, they just kinda come to me with little effort at all.

11 days till training camp opens.

Playboy picked the Eagles beating the Steelers in the Super Bowl. Of course, they had the Steelers winning it all 2 years ago when we were 6-10, so keep that in mind.

Until someone shows that they can knock the Patriots out of the playoffs, they have to be the favorite.

I can't argue with that. We have to replace the right side of our offensive line and also that big tall guy Ben liked to throw to sometimes. Plaxi-something. I don't expect 15-1 again.

I came across a link to this while reading a different site, and thought you might find it interesting:

American Unitarian Conference

Thanks. That is a very interesting site. I guess I truly am a Unitarian. :-)

Among other things I have been falling, scraping skin of my tired old body, bleeding, crying - pissin & moaning. How about you?

For more than a week my Internet has been in and out. They tell me the trouble is fixed and the sob is dead the next day. I did get on through dialup a few times but I'm so spoiled that I just quit the whole thing except to check my mail.

Oh! One more thing. I bought a Compaq Presario R4000 Laptop. I didn't need it but there is still a little of the old techie in my bones. This thing is a screamer - 64 Bit AMD 4000+ processor, 1 gig ram, and a whole bunch of goodies. I am seriously thinking of using it as my main computer, replacing my desktop. The chore ahead of me is transferring all the junk from the desktop to the laptop and setting up a two (or three) computer network.

I am seriously thinking of giving my older desktop to the local Senior Center. I don't need three computers any more than I need three wives. :-(

One of the local cable channels is saying that Teddy Brusci will be back this year. True to form, the Patriots are saying nothing.

The Patriots may well still be the best team in football but the hurdles in the way of s third consecutive SuperBowl are daunting.

If I had to bet I'd bet against it.

We're getting DSL at home, finally going away from dialup. We were getting a good bargain on dialup, but the service is increasingly crappy. Which makes it not such a bargain. My wife is now taking some online classes for her new career as a pharmacy technician and needs reliable quick service.

So, we'll be hopefully using Verizon DSL tonight. $20/month for 3 months and then $30 afterward.

If you get reliable service you'll love it. Of course, the important thing is your wife will love it. :)

The price is right. Cable settles out at >$40/month.

I have a satellite dish and am quite happy with it. There's not even cable run to my house. To go with a cable modem, I'd need to have it installed and then they'd insist I buy at least some TV package. I don't want to go there cause I think it's ridiculous what you get for your money with cable TV.

Sarah will never know that people used to just flip through the channels looking for something to watch, versus having an interactive guide to tell you.

Right - but.... I have no choice. DSL is not available in the boonies where I live and Satellite Internet pricing is through the roof. I'm stuck with cable at a combined price >$100 a month. Oh well, whatayagonnado? I'm used to it now and can't conceive of going back. Besides, I'm old and feeble - not much time left on this earth. I'll just keep spoiling myself until my kids come to the conclusion "the old man has lost it". :)

Do you by any chance have Comcast as your provider? My friend in Virginia has Comcast, and has been having exactly the same issues. Apparently they 'upgraded' their software before they got all the bugs out.
