The Neverending Story

After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)

Thank heavens for GoBack. I have gone wild in the last few days and somehow my computer decided to get sick.

1. I have ordered a 43" HDTV and of course was required to upgrade my cable service to HD & Digital.

2. While I was at it I decided to order the High Speed Internet. (DSL is still not available and I have given up waiting for it.) I will wait to see what develops in the Satellite and DSL world.

3. I intend to use my new TV as a monitor, either in a PIP or full mode.

4. I also purchased a 200GB disk because my 80GB disk was filling up (mostly junk but it is easier to upgrade a disk than it is to clean it up. :-)

5. My new disk initialized properly and it appeared to partition into 80, 80, & 40GB partitions properly. IOW, everything seemed fine.

6. I used it for a few hours this morning and everything worked fine until Windows XP Pro blew up and refused to boot even in the Safe mode. Just typical Windows junk messages and/or a stupid Windows Logo not doing anything.

7. After trying all the Windows tools I gave up and reverted a few hours with GoBack.

8. I ran all the Norton Disk and Windows utilities and it gives me a clean bill of health. Whew!

9. Never, ever, never, put your faith in Windows! This message is for you Mack.

I've never done anything like that in my life and we all know you can't teach an old dog new tricks. :-)

That would be similar to my owning a new Chrysler 300C and asking me if I would drive it in the stock car races. I may have a machine which is mechanically capable but there would be a feeble old fool behind the wheel. (Similar to electing Celestine to be Pope. Don't get angry with me - I can't help myself. :-)

No haven't hooked it up to PC. I have DSL. Didn't order high speed connection from Cable Company.

My IT manager met with our ISP today to discuss renewal of our contract. We are going to be getting double the bandwidth (a full T-1 now) for 1/2 the price of what we had been paying. :o)

Another way of looking at it is you were paying at least 4 times what it was worth in the first place. :-(

I will be replacing AOL with Adelphia High Speed Internet. Of, course AOL has a provision ($15/month) to use a different ISP and keep AOL and I may have to use it for a while. I have hundreds of "Favorite Places" and thousands of "Saved Mail" items and no tools available for a smooth transfer. (The AOL stuff is propietary).

I have found a few tools at reasonable prices which will transfer all that stuff to IE. Of course I have junked IE and switched to Firefox. I may be forced to uninstall Firefox, switch back to IE, convert my junk, and reinstall Firefox. Damn!

It reminds me of the "good old days" when we had a main frame computer and were almost forced to stay with the original vendor because of the cost and complexity of a system change.

If you hear of any tools which will copy over all my old AOL stuff please let me know.

At the time we signed the original contract, that was the market rate. That's just the nature of the internet business. Computers in general, even. 10 years ago, we'd pay $1200 for a PC that couldn't even begin to run the software we use today. Now we can get a new PC for $350-400. I just bought a b/w laser printer for $99, that prints 3x as fast as one purchased several years ago for $750.

Of course I have junked IE and switched to Firefox. I may be forced to uninstall Firefox, switch back to IE, convert my junk, and reinstall Firefox. Damn!

Well, for one thing, I just finished with the snowblower. We didn't get much, just enough to require removal. The long range forecast is for a pretty big storm next week.

Oh, I'll find a way to transfer the stuff. I just don't move as fast as I used to.

I was kidding about the T1 billing. I remember the company paying $6,000 for the first PC-XT in 1981. 640k memory, 10 meg disk, and a (I think) 6ms 8088 processor. My present PC is much, much more powerful than our main frame in the 80's.

My present printer is an Epson Stylus CX5400. Print-scan-copy and fast. The winter ice scene I sent you a while ago was scanned from the newspaper. If I remember correctly I paid $49 for this printer.

The most expensive parts of any printer are the refill supplies so I always buy a printer which can use refills on the aftermarket.

If you bought an HP printer for example it may be cheaper to throw it away and buy a new one when the ink runs out. :-)

My college alma mater, Lawrence University, has secured its second consecutive automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. They won the regular season again, and tonight defeated Ripon College in the conference tournament final. You may recall that last year LU advanced to the D-III Elite Eight, losing 82-81 in overtime to eventual champion UW-Stevens Point.

Dear Friends
Ginny and I’s 20 year honeymoon is finally over. She passed on this last Sabbath morning at 5:15 am 2/26/05, she would have been 73 this March 23rd.

The Wegenere’s Granulomatosis, (WG), must have weakened the blood vessels in her brain, because she had a stroke a month or so ago, then a few weeks later she had several more and she has been in a non responsive state for a month now.

I believe her Spirit left to be with God a couple of weeks ago, and I have been watching her human soul and body struggle to hold on since.

The many caring phone calls I’ve received have strengthened me, and although I know she’s in Paradise being comforted by God’s Holy presence, and we’ll both be given our new glorified bodies at the same time in the future, and even though I know she’s never going to suffer again as she has these last two years, my heart still has a big hole in it, and I’m jealous she went without me.

I’ve tried to understand why God has made sure that every person who comes into this world has to suffer losing someone that meant the world to them before they die, and it’s like a prerequisite.

I wonder if God suffered this same loss at sometime?
When His Son was crucified?
Possibly when Satan turned on Him and rejected His love?
Now God is forced to cast him away for eternity with out ever seeing that spirit He must have loved so much in earlier times.

Please pray my time will pass quickly until I see Ginny again.
