The Neverending Story

The Neverending Story

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

After a nine month hiatus, The Neverending Story, the granddaddy of daily threads, has returned to Free Republic. Originally begun on March 24, 2001, as a religious discussion thread, the NES evolved over time into a daily thread spanning a wide variety of topics. The new and improved Neverending Story will feature conversation on religion, politics, culture, current events, business, sports, family, hobbies, general fellowship and more. We welcome you to hang your hat in our little corner of FR. We ask you to abide by the FR posting rules and, even in the midst of serious debate, to keep the discussion friendly and respectful. Those who wish to "duke it out" are asked to take it over to the Smoky Backroom. I placed this thread in "General/Chat" for a reason, so play nice and have fun! :o)

Just a bit of football news for all my old football buds on FR ...

From today's Dallas Morning News ...

Cowboys agree to deal with Bledsoe, sources say Quarterback who was drafted by Parcells to finalize deal today

As a Cowboy fan, I think this is stupid. Parcells is just trying to find a quick solution so that he can get to the Superbowl before his contract is up. It's not gonna work. A rebuilding team does not need a bunch of has-beens in the lineup.

Anyway ... just wanted to share that with y'all in case you haven't heard yet.

My reply to al_c:

I'd heard rumors of this last week. Bledsoe, of course, was drafted by Parcells when he was at New England. Like Testaverde, Parcells has a track record with him, and trusts him. He clearly doesn't have the confidence in Drew Henson. Now from what I understand, Jerry Jones wants Henson in the lineup, so look for Parcells to be the next Hall of Fame coach run out of Dallas by Jones.

Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice victory over the Soviets. I taped the game to watch over the weekend.

Wow, now that was some planning ahead! ;o)

Isn't there a yellow?

Yes. I received my yellow belt around four months ago.

Ask Al if he's gonna play NCAA tournament with us. Someone will need to find the site and set it up for us.

I don't remember if he or Steven did it last year.

BTW, Al says he's in for the bracket-picking contest. Do we have a volunteer to run it this year?

Well, I didn't watch it last evening, cause it would run into Sarah's bedtime routine. So I taped it on the later feed.

Remember I said th eother day I was starting to turn on Arena football? A columnist the other day identified why this is the case: I missed seeing the dasher boards.

If you want to watch a good movie with your new girl, try Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's a really thought-provoking movie with Jim Carey and Kate Winslet as a couple who (individually) hire a service which "erases" one's memory of a relationship from your mind. It's really clever and endearing. And it's one of those pictures where you just have to watch the beginning again after you watch the end, in order for it all to make sense.

I graduated to my orange belt tonight! :o)

It's not orange ya big dummy. If Christo says it's saffron it's saffron. ;-)

Did Tom Ridge organize this system, too? Yellow clearly beongs between orange and green. See:

I watch very few movies but if I were inclined to do so and Jim Carey was in it I would cross it off the list.

I don't know why but just the sight of him makes me want to vomit. In some way he reminds me of a young Jerry Lewis. I reacted to him, and still do, in the same way.

I know I'm just a grouchy old fart.

This is a very mature role for him, and he does not in any way ham it up. So don't expect Ace Ventura.

The movie is also set in Boston, in the winter, and the frozen Charles plays a role.

The little hobbit guy, Elijah Woods is also in it, and Kirsten Dunst dances around in her underwear.

I still get a queasy feeling in my stomach at the thought of boiled cabbage (this after more than 60 years). I am thankful for the remote so I can change channels within seconds of seeing his face. Never let it be said that I am controlled by logic. :-)

I don't care.

None of this has any meaning to me. I have no idea who those people are.

I meant, that you taped it 25 years ago on your Betamax. ;o)

I saw it in the theater last summer. When it came out a few weeks ago, we rented and watched it. Stacy hadn't seen it before. Excellent film!

Oh, yeah. Duh.

Dasher boards?

The boards seperating the playing surface from the bench/seats at a hockey rink. They sell advertising space on the boards, and some afficianados can tell where a game is based on the ads. Like if you see an ad for "Pages Jeunes," you're probably in Montreal.

Since Arena football is played in the same places, it was a tongue-in-cheek way of seeing we miss seeing these things.

I couldn't get my wife to watch it cause she thought it would be too weird (like Being John Malkovich) or she'd have to think too much. Her loss.

I thought it almost like "Brave New World" at the end, when the characters decide to take reality, warts and all, versus a manufactured "perfection." Also interesting comments on either the "perseverance" of love, or how we can fall into the same traps over and over. Depending on how you want to look at it.

I guess you're not as provincial as I am. Of course, you would have a harder time at it. I have seen all three movies set in Pitsburgh (Sudden Death, Flashdance, and some bad Bruce Willis movie about river cops). I also used to watch Mr. Belvedere, though in all honesty I was a poor college student and we only got 3 channels.

The little hobbit guy, Elijah Woods is also in it, and Kirsten Dunst dances around in her underwear.

You surely have some awareness of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He's the head hobbit.

Kirsten Dunst is best known for playing Spiderman's girlfriend. She is the perkiest actress to come along the pike in a long time.
