MIAMI -- Miami-Dade police say one of its officers was forced to shoot and kill a pit bull after the dog charged at her Wednesday, but the owner of the dog is outraged.
The incident happened at Southwest 236 Street after Miami-Dade police received a call from a neighbor saying there was a vicious pit bull attacking livestock.
An officer responded, went to the residence and entered the property. According to police, the officer received an unfriendly welcome by the pit bull.
"The pit bull turned and went to attack the officer," Miami-Dade police spokesman Joey Giordano said. "The officer discharged one round, striking the pit bull. Another pit bull was taken into custody, surrendered by the family and will be euthanized at this point."
But the dog's owner disagrees with the story.
"She shot her twice. They said she charged at her. I know she didn't charge," owner Selene Suarez said. "Maybe she walked over to them to say hello. I have a 3-month-old son and the dogs play with him. They lick him. They don't do anything to him. They were good animals."
The female officer was not hurt during the ordeal.
Since 1989 it has been illegal to have pit bulls as pets in Miami-Dade County. Suarez said her two dogs, Dolce and Cabana, were award-winning show dogs and were in the county visiting for the holidays.
She said the dogs are kept in a kennel in Broward County where it is legal to own pit bulls.
ping a ling.
A mad dog of an owner

I did not know that it is illegal to own pits in Miami-Dade. Very interesting.
Wiomen are emotional and unfit for active duty as field police officers.
The only good pit bull is a dead one.

I'm up in Seminole County (FL) and it's illegal here as well as several other Florida counties.
Two neighbors of mine have pitbulls..I avoid going outside when they take them for a walk. Being naturally defensive about their animals- these folks become insistent I come over and "meet" their friendly and sweet pitbulls. I decline.
I understand your reluctance, but it might be a good idea to let the owners introduce you to their dogs, letting the dogs know that you're 'okay' rather than 'not okay'. You'd probably be much less likely to be attacked by the dogs if something weird happened in your neighborhood.
Those Pits can be hard to put down. My partner at work had a pit attack him on a traffic stop. The dog ran off after it was shot 3 times and survived. Another time, one greeted us at the door on a dope warrant and took three rounds from an MP5. Animal Control drug it out alive from under a oil tank in the basement where it ran off too. They put it to sleep that night. On the other hand, I've been around a couple of real sweet pits that had great owners.
There are several pits in the gated community where I live. A lot of yuppies seem to own them these days. Go figure.
I've owned Rotweillers for over 25 years...They are a great family dog and wonderful pet when raised properly.
The problem is that a lot of folks intentionally mistreat this breed so that their dog is ill tempered. They are a massive and dangerous animal when in this state.
Earlier this year, I adopted two Rots from the local shelter whose owners could no longer care for them. They are constantly around small children and other dogs.
NeverGore :^)
Have you made a searching and fearless moral inventory of each of them?
yep..just watch Animal Planet sometime when their show "Animal Police" (think that's right) is on...miami-dade is a regular on there.
My bitch is half pit bull and half beagle. She is as sweet as they come. The puppies in the picture are hers. They're great.
