The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

We have a bunch of dead stuff that needs to be burned. Maybe Becky would like to come for a visit...
Just don't give her coffee too, otherwise you might get more burned than you bargined for! :-D ;-)

If I post a picture can you zoom it up about 75%? For some reason I can't get the zoom to work at York.

I have a very weird phenomena going on here. It started a couple of months ago with two yearlings. One ate the other's tail off. Well, we separated them, then one of the mares ate off the tail of the mare she is with. Then the other mare ate her tail. Then one of the mares ate off the tail of one of our geldings and had to reach through hot wire to do this.

Everyone gets minerals and supplements, plenty to eat, grain and hay. Why are they doing this?

Hey thanks. I changed back to ever ready and my camera working again. The other working fine for the kids games but can't handle flashes.

Sure... Probably better though if you email it to me at original resolution, if you post it from snapfish, it may have lost some quality already.

I'e had them do that. We had one eat his mother's tail off, and she had a long thick tail. It was so much I called the vet, I was afraid he would colic. or not be able to pass it.

Vet said he mmight, but doubted it. They do it from nervosness, so he said, but one can see another doing it and pick up the habit. Maybe that is why you have two doign it.

Mostly I just visualize them. Sometimes I imagine I see them when we are in the hills but Since they aren't there, I don't. I probably have any over active imagination because my husband never sees anything.

We went on an orgaized moonlight ride once. It was nice riding at night, but they stayed on gravel roads all night. I'm not sure why, since there were other trails. Maybe for the moonlight.

I've rode here and been out at night. But I always make sure I'm close to the house when it gets dark. It gets real dark here, in the woods.

May-Sept: Lows 60's - 80's Highs 90's - 100's Oct-Apr: Lows 40's - 50's Highs 60's - 80's. May and June are actually quite bearable due to low humidity. That is if your body can stand humidities in the <10% range. Less than 5% humidity is not uncommon.

I can't think why they'd be nervous but maybe the weather was making them so. We've sprayed all the tails with a mixture of baby oil, cayenne pepper and black pepper because the bitter apple didn't work but I was just out a little while ago and my mare's tail is shorter than it was.

The foal we had that did it, ate his mothers whole tail in 1 night. That's what bothered me, all that at one time.

We had just brought the mare and foal home, just bought the foal actually. The guy was nice enough to let us take the mare till the foal calmed down. We had them in a stall, and he wasn't use to that. We figured that was why he did it.

He never showed any sign that eating it bothered him. I checked his poop for a few days, nver saw any sign of it.

The funny thing is, the mare's tail looked like it had been precision cut with a pair of sissors, straight across right at tail bone level.

Yes, that's about the way it looks. I've got four horses standing outside with almost no tail. Two of the missing tails weren't real long or thick, but two of them were.

I bet the mare we had had 10 lbs of hair in her tail. It was the longest, thickest, and thick hairs, I'd ever seen. Scared the crap out of me.

It actually took me awhile to figure out what happened to it. I look all over the stall think she had rubbed it off on something. I then saw the foal nibbling on what was left. Called around and found out that foals eating tails and manes was pretty common. It's never happened again tho for me.

I watched Dot like a hawk. Belle has the most beautiful tail. I think I actually braided Belle's and put a tail bag on her to discourage it, in case Dot got the notion to do that.

The tail bags work then? I've got some of those, although I don't know if I have enough tail left but at this point I'll try anything. I'm going to walk out and take a picture so you can see it.
