Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Yep, just south of Tulsa.
What kind of research?
Becky
Optical matierals and lasers.
I wanted to ask you...what happened with the umbilical cord. Does it seperate from the placenta by its self or does the mare "cut" it?
As the mare lays down for delivery, it enables the umbilical cord to remain atttached, thus transferring the blood needed. When the foal tries to stand, normally the umbilical cord will rupture about 2 inches from the foals abdomen.
Huh. I knew nature would take care of it but I didn't know if the mare detached it, herself though. Amazing how things work, isn't it?
In sheep, sometimes this doesnt happen, and you have to hold the lambs abdomen, twang the cord, and it will go white in the place that you need to cut. I think the same applies for foals.
Although in sheep its different, cause you normally have to cut and the sheep like to eat the placenta! YUK!
Actually, I know it sounds gross but it's protein.
The closest we have to sheep are goats:') Someday I would like to visit Europe.
My friend was a midwife when I was pregnant 11 years ago, and she had to go to a lot of "natural" births in a village not far from ours. There was a religous group there that insisted the placenta be kept and they fried it for the new mother.....urgh!
EWWW
Tell me about it! Its not something I could do! LOL
I would rather go to Tony Rama's and eat a cow:')
LOL
How many goats do you have? In a way they are similar to sheep, apart from shearing and I think they are a little bit more intelligent.
Oh, yes, I remember you are looking for land. We had goats here, but something got to them. We had a panther about here for a while, and a neighboring farmer had problems too. We were left with one but Lightning played a little too rough with her one day. : (
When I was in high school, I worked for a guy whose wife gave birth to a 13lb, 11oz boy. I thought THAT was a big baby!
(chucklng) Your post reminded me of that scene in Sea Biscuit where they put a sheep or lamb kind of animal in the stall to calm the horse and it came flying back.
Lightning loves to play with his "apple" that we got him. He picks it up and throws it accross the field, then chases it and moves it around with his feet, our australian shepherd is very good at playing soccer too! We almost have our own team, but the chickens are useless!
BTW I have posted a photo of James and myself on my homepage, as lots of people like to know who they are talking too!
I got my horse one of those balls. He killed it :')
