Actually, I know it sounds gross but it's protein.
My friend was a midwife when I was pregnant 11 years ago, and she had to go to a lot of "natural" births in a village not far from ours. There was a religous group there that insisted the placenta be kept and they fried it for the new mother.....urgh!
