In sheep, sometimes this doesnt happen, and you have to hold the lambs abdomen, twang the cord, and it will go white in the place that you need to cut. I think the same applies for foals.

Although in sheep its different, cause you normally have to cut and the sheep like to eat the placenta! YUK!
