The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Great pics.... are the dog and goats yours too? I haven't seen pics of them before! I've thought about getting goats to eat brush in the back forty, but I'd have to redo fencing. I't ain't goat proof now ;~D

I've always wanted one of those big ole farm geese, but they are always so aggressive. Might be the only farm bird that could fend off curious dogs though.

I That occurs a lot around here. You buy property and fences and barns go up first and people live in the barns until the house built.

A lady I know slightly built a two story barn, huge thing and the top floor is their house. I don't know what the floor plan is like.

That occurs a lot around here. You buy property and fences and barns go up first and people live in the barns until the house built.

I'm with them! I am scanning pictures of my boarding stable dream barn I've drawn up.... It has a temp home in it that would become the office for the stable later on if/when the house was built.

It makes sense. You can apply the rent money to your own place.

I designed this barn years ago, when I first began seriously dreaming of leaving cubicle world and running a boarding stable. At the time, I was single and thought myself quite content to live and work in the barn. But even if I can't convince my husband of that life, the house could be temporary and would later make a nice stable office, or even an apartment for some young kid who wants to clean stalls in lieu of rent. :~D

I still really like the design of it. After visiting many boarding stables I like the individual tack rooms located at each stall a lot... it might be a big extra cost building at first construction, but it keeps the barn nice if every horse's blankets and tack boxes aren't cluttering the aisles. Each stall would have a run where they could come and go, and each divider between stalls could be removed for foaling. I picture the arena space with just rails around it so it looks open all the way across.

Back and side elevations, barn layout

Entrance:

Any of you with boarding barn experience, please feel free to make ergonomic suggestions. Dream barns are still open for re-design!

Can you add me to the SaddleClub "ping" list?? After years of being "horseless" I am hoping to get back in the saddle this summer. Anyone know anything about adopting retired thoroughbreds off the track? I'm in Illinois and C.A.N.T.E.R. has opportunities, sometimes more than others, but I do know that I am going to try to locate a horse through adoption rather than go through a breeder. I am amazed at the plight of the thoroughbreds coming off the track......sorta like the greyhounds. The only problem for me is the old "well, if you can adopt one, why not three??" syndrome and I have my daughter egging me on, besides.......

Any information and opinions welcome!!

Welcome!

I think AnAmericanMother knows something of t-breds from the track. I know some people who are happy with theirs, after some initial training. They don't come off the track knowing anything but how to run, so you have to either be skilled, or willing to spend some money with a trainer who can basically start over with their saddle work.

I would add another thought to your mix... if you are seriously thinking about adoption of a horse in need rather than purchase of a horse...

If you are familiar with the menopause drug Premarin, (made from pregnant mare urine) there are many many adult mares and weanling foals that are side effects of this 'industry' and are put up for adoption if they are lucky. Many are papered, but some are better handled than others, so again, it depends on your skill level whether you would be better buying a horse or adopting one of those. But like the horses off the track, they are deserving of rescue to good homes.

I really like the individual tack areas. We are all in a room about 8x12. We have individual space but things get moved around. Another thing is that we have two tie poles. First come, first serve. After taken you tie in front of stalls. The walk way gets crowded sometimes. Lot's of lights too.

I think there would be cross ties at each stall, or tie rings to the rail of the arena, but yeah, it can get crowded and any width I can spare for aisleway would not be wasted!

And light is important. There would be lots of lights, but I also would have not only the windows above the stalls for daylighting, but skylights in the roof. I hate dark barns.

I've done the common tack room thing too, and hated it. stuff gets moved or borrowed, saddles get scratched, and I really like individual storage with a key.
