Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Though we pass them by today...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Yes, there were about 4 or 5 "Lone Wolf and Cub" movies made (based loosely on the manga) but I think most fans agree only a couple of them are worth seeing.
I have all of the volumes of the "Lone Wolf" edition published by Dark Horse. I appreciated the small size, because it lowered the price down to $9.95 per volume! ;)

Yeah - babies are cute alright... even if they can't stay on the pony very well.
Good night everyone.... see ya tomorrow.
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
Lowered? That was the old days... these days the good stuff in full size is that much. Two of the series I buy are 7.95 a volume!
They ought to bring out a new edition of the manga... there's an audience for it. We newbie manga lovers are spoiled by the normal-sized, non-flipped art and other niceties.
It's cold here. I'm in layers and have a scarf wrapped around my head.

What a precious little girl! Sonya and Tim must be so happy, especially since the baby's pooping now! ;o) What is the baby's name? I know you mentioned it before, but I can't remember.

In the late-80s/early-90s a comics publisher called First Comics tried to publish a U.S. edition of Lone Wolf and Cub in standard comic book size, ~30 pages per issue, for $2.50 per issue (high at the time). The issues were very high quality though, with card-stock covers and original cover art (the Dark Horse editions "borrowed" their cover art from the First Comics editions). The series was not complete though; they cut out stories that didn't move the plot along. Even so, they only got out 30-some issues and barely covered half of the original story before ceasing publication.

Shame... Nice when people try new things. Dark Horse has several manga titles, perhaps they will consider re-releasing Lone Wolf one of these days.
There have been some real strides in graphic novel publishing lately. The price has come down far enough for people like me to risk buying a volume of something I might not like. I just wish American comics weren't so "busy". They give me a headache reading them. And they seem to have either a great story, or great art - Sandman, for instance, I like the stories but the art was really ugly.

The Dark Horse editions aren't *that* old... the last volume was released in 2002. Might be a few more years yet before someone re-releases them...
Heh, to me, most manga seems plain compared to the U.S. comics I'm used to. Beautiful art, but the lack of backgrounds makes it look "flat" to me.
I would try to recommend some U.S. comics with both good art and story, but I'm not really "current"...

I can say with certainty, that it sucks to be you right now... and that would be different from any other day.... how?...

The lack of backgrounds get annoying, yes, but I have more trouble with vibrant colors all vying for space and then the words shoved up into the corners or wherever they fit. At least, that's how it looks to my untrained eye.
I think the lack of backgrounds is at least partly because it's all black-and-white (which I really like). Also stems from Japanese art which seems to me to be rather minimalist.

You know, a lot of independent/alternative U.S. comics published in the 80s/90s were in black and white. The ones that survived to make it to graphic novel collections (such as Elfquest and Cerebus) usually had color added at that point, however.
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
Elfquest was too cute-looking for me, I couldn't get past the first couple pages. Cerebus I've never heard of.

Oh, no, don't let the "cuteness" put you off of Elfquest. The story is great, one of the classics of U.S. comics! Make it through Fire and Flight and I think you'll be hooked; the next volumes in order are The Forbidden Grove, Captives of Blue Mountain and Quest's End. That covers the original story; the first two follow-on series Siege at Blue Mountain (vol. 5 & 6) and Kings of the Broken Wheel (vol. 7 & 8) are also worth reading. After that, the quality of both story and art became hit or miss, as new artists and writers were brought in to expand the franchise.
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
Well, I'll give it another chance, then! It just looked "elfy-welfy" (the official term :-D) so I avoided it...

Ah, well... sorry I disappeared. Rose's office chair has been slowly deteriorating, which deterioration suddenly accelerated. After spending the last half hour trying to fix it, it's become apparent we're going to have to buy a new one (which we can't afford).
On that happy note, I probably should get to bed... have a good night!
