Elfquest was too cute-looking for me, I couldn't get past the first couple pages. Cerebus I've never heard of.

Oh, no, don't let the "cuteness" put you off of Elfquest. The story is great, one of the classics of U.S. comics! Make it through Fire and Flight and I think you'll be hooked; the next volumes in order are The Forbidden Grove, Captives of Blue Mountain and Quest's End. That covers the original story; the first two follow-on series Siege at Blue Mountain (vol. 5 & 6) and Kings of the Broken Wheel (vol. 7 & 8) are also worth reading. After that, the quality of both story and art became hit or miss, as new artists and writers were brought in to expand the franchise.
