The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

THIS is a 1970 Yukon Yellow VW Beetle. My Precious has all these same characteristics, it's just beat-up looking. Someday we hope it will look this good!

That's a prettier color than it looked on that little swatch that looked like colostrum poo ;~D

Our childhood bug was a paler yellow than that, I think, but it was also yellow.

I know Herbie the Love Bug wasn't that color, but that picture just screams "HERBIE!" Have the boys seen that movie? It's really cute.

Yep, it oughta be pretty when we get it all painted, but that will probably be the very last thing we do. The guy that we got it from says that if you take the body off and work on the car it can throw it out of alignment enough that you can't get the body back on! So we'll get all the body work underneath done first, then the very last thing we'll take the body off, take it in, likely have it sandblasted then repaint it the same color...

Oh and yep, they've seen Herbie! I checked it out from the library.

Here is a picture of the interior. Mine is the same, just beat up. The dash will have to be replaced but the panels on the door are good. The seat covers look just like these except they are deteriorated. You can buy exact replacements. The steering wheel is just like this except without the cover, my horn button is shattered but I think we're going to try to put it back together using modeling glue or something.

One of these years I'll get to do the same with an old Chevelle or Mustang.

Looks like the horse just needed some more "roughage". *grin*

I snoop around on that Saddle Club thread once in a while to satisfy my horse-envy.

Well...they're gone.

The people showed up a bit early, we sat and talked and they played with the dogs for ten or fifteen minutes, and off they went. The dogs warmed up to them quicker than they often do - Fritzi in particular seemed pretty taken with the lady. Fiona...I think she'll be more his dog. She doesn't really like to be picked up, but he was scratching her back and talking to her and she was happy. He also liked the she was so eager for a car ride...cute little brat. *sniff*

Tam and Halvah walked in while they were there and they immediately said "Oh! They look like x and x" - turns out THEY have a Siamese and another mix, and the Siamese used to play with their dachshund and has been rather despondent this last month since the dog passed away. They were pleased that the dogs get along fine with cats - we hadn't thought to discuss that.

*sigh* And they were very nice, down to earth folks. Lots of support the troops stickers on their car - and NASCAR stuff. I'm doubting they're exactly rabid liberals. Not that such a thing matters so long as they're OK with dogs, but...

Gah...I'm still sitting here wondering how they're settling in and worrying about what would happen if one of them got loose when they still don't know the people enough to come to them, and all the other things that could go wrong. Have a major tension headache.

But on the whole, it went well. I...really hope they get along. But I do hope I hear some things from them.

We're going to try to keep as much as possible of the original stuff. No sense keeping the seat padding or covers...they are literally powdery and break at the slightest touch. It's easy to replace and doesn't cost that much. But stuff like the door panels and the rubber mats in the bottom seems just fine!

The dash has got a big place that is torn out...but they are also make replacements. It's not an imperative repair though and although it doesn't "look" good, it can wait till all the other more important stuff is done. Even the seats can be "usable" until all the other stuff is done.

So it'll probably go like this...engine and such first, then underbody work, then exterior upper body work, then interior.

Steve says I'm very enthusiastic.

I'm glad it worked out Rosie. Sounds like it was a good fit.

You've taken some major steps in the past few days, making your decision, telling your family, and now this.

We're proud of you.

And if'n you miss the dogs too much, I'm sure g'nad will come and pee on your carpet.

Oh Rosie...you did a good thing!

I really loved my greyhound but after she bit Matthew I had to give her back to the organization I got her from. As much as I knew it was the right thing to do, I still felt bad. I was all she knew since leaving the tracks.

I felt so much better when they updated me to let me know that she had gone to an older couple and they just doted on her in a way that I just couldn't do financially.
