(Vanity)Some people just need to shut the hell up(Vanity) AKA Please flame me, I'm bored. (Vanity)

Okay, so I'm doing my nightly FReeper thing, reading new posts, visiting the threads that I've been pinged to, etc..etc. Nothing new, I've been doing this for several years now, pretty much on a daily basis. I don't start too many threads (because frankly, nobody really wants or needs my 2 cents).

But tonight I've had it. I can't bite my tongue any more. I've got to vent.

Why are there A LOT of Freepers who insist on commenting on topics that they have no idea what the hell they're talking about?

I just got done reading the thread about the Rush Limbaugh spoof on Saturday Night Live last night vis a vis The Drudge Report Story. There were something like 70+ posts on the thread: (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1304821/posts) And it's clearly obvious that maybe three posters had actually scene the SNL sketch in question.

I love the fact that everybody is free to their opinion, but geez...why must a thread about a TV show be clogged up with self righteous after self righteous claiming that they haven't seen SNL in 20 years, or some even claiming that they don't even bother watching TV.
Good for you!! Great! I don't freakin' care if you do or not. Why are you bothering posting on a TV related thread of you're so above the mighty idiot box?

Or, for that matter, the people who claim that SNL isn't as funny now as it was when Belushi, Chase, Akroyd, or whoever was on it. Boo yah! I don't have time to participate in what was. I didn't watch SNL then, I barely watch it now.

Of the 70+ posts on the thread maybe a dozen were actually about the event in question. And those all seemed to say the same thing: The producers of that particular animated segment bashed both sides pretty evenly.

Yeah, I agree it's pretty insane that a show that has had the drug abusers and drug ODs that SNL has would poke fun at Rush's drug problem. (I actually thought the skit was pretty outdated, Rush's drug probelm was last years news.) But I understand why one of the NBC execs would be pretty outraged and that is somewhat newsworthy. (Though, it being on Drudge I wonder how newsworthy it really is.)

But that's not the first time I've seen crap like this happen... and it's happening with more and more frequency on FR. People totally out of the loop offering their opinion without knowing any of the facts.

There was a thread earlier today about California Employee's retirement system. I'm getting slammed in there because of a posters idea of what the FEDERAL retirement system is. No where that I saw did anybody start talking about the Federal... I was talking about California as that is what experience I have, and that's what the blessed article was about.

But nobody reads any more. They see a headline, they have their 2 cent opinion, and they post it.

Where's the critical thinking process at? It's lacking in the threads I'm reading. (And if it's on the threads I'm not reading, I apologize for not knowing it.)

If I didn't know better I'd think DU was sending very well disguised trolls over, just to water down everything.

Okay, I guess I'm done ranting now. Flame away, I can take it.

My point being, one can usually tell from the first three or four words of a poster's reply if it's a post you want to waste your time reading.

It would help if the poster's name was at the beginning of the reply instead of the end. :-)

I agree with your point. However, there ain't no way to police the suggestion. Freedom of posting is just as messy as freedom of speech, or freedom of political activity.

I think part of the root of the problem is that posters become very defensive when others critique their posts. Of course, that is rooted in a combination of insecurity and pride. For example, someone has a strong feeling about something they've read, so they reply to it. Perhaps they know a little about the topic but their passion is stronger than their knowledge. Someone replies to their post correcting them or challenging them and they fly off the handle -- their passion has been attacked and they feel vulnerable because their reasoning has been challenged, so they perceive it. The response is almost always to attack back. I am seeing it quite a bit more often.

I don't usually respond in such a defensive manner until someone falsely accuses me or directly insults me. The reason I don't get defensive is because the more I read and study, the more I realize I don't know. Sure, I have a pretty deep well of knowledge on the issues I study, but that knowledge is not complete and not perfect. So if someone corrects me or challenges me, my reaction is to keep it open for consideration. If they 'correct' me or 'challenge' me with information I know to be faulty (disproved by multiple sources) I just try to calm them down and have pity on them. I'm not trying to sound arrogant here. It's just that I used to be pretty quick-tempered, hot headed and cocky. I suppose we all struggle with being overly defensive. But it's true, you know you're on the road to wisdom when you can openly and honestly question what you believe you know to be true. This comes with age and learning and having open-minded discussions with other bright, learned people who post here.

I was going to flame you for this comment but then I realized that your comment was flamebait. So I won't. HA!

Hey, while we're griping, I have a gripe too.

People, PLEASE cut and paste the reply you're replying to so everyone else will know what the heck you're talking about. STOP BEING LAZY.

Maybe people that don't know the difference between seen and scene or that end sentences with prepositions(Where's the critical thinking process at?) shouldn't be allowed to post. It's an imperfect world and we don't get graded on our content at FR.

Actually the scene/seen thing is a complete typo... I incorrectly type at about 90wpm. The dangling of the prepositions is something I know I need to work on (see, I just did it again)... you're right, it's grammatically incorrect, but I write like I talk, and most people seem to like it.

Anyway... I'm not saying there should or shouldn't be any requirements. I'm just saying that I've noticed it becoming more and more obvious over the past few weeks/months, I had some free time, and I'd thought I'd vent to see if anybody else agreed with me. Sounds like a few people do. That's good enough for me.

I have a sneaking suspicion in 5 years this will basically be a board for religious conservatives only, as well. Hope I'm proven wrong.

Most solid conservatives are solid precisely because they have a deep faith in God. Because of their faith, they see temporary trends for what they are - temporary trends.

We get out into some of the back country here in northern Utah, cause we like to go hunting and exploring...great elk country, some mule deer. Lots of mountain lion, too, but they are rare to spot. You are more likely to see an elk or deer leg on the ground and know that the lions have been doing their thing.

We were out shooting clay birds on some of the national forest land up here, and lo and behold, this very large and impressive moose decides he wants to walk across the area we were at, so we climbed back into the car just because we didn't want to have to talk about a moose biting me (being the only female in the group, and not having a sister to get bit) and watched him walk magnificiently across the field and disapear back into the woods.

Saw another one at Yellowstone.

Seen a lot of elk. There is a winter feeding station about 50 miles from the house where they give sleigh rides through the elk herd. It's an intentional feeding program run by DWR to keep the elk numbers up.

Every Saturday night someone gets upset with the First Amendment and inflicts their outrage on the forum.

You may ignore it.

There must be. Either a 'Hitler' or part of the 'sheeple' or a Bushbot or a slave to the Republican party. I studied philosophy and logic in college (not a major or minor but took several courses and continued with a lot of extracurricular studies). It really amuses me when someone tries to pick an argument apart with what they believe to be logic and to see them being completely illogical (breaking all the logical fallacies and having no clue about syllogism). But like I said in another post to this thread, I really try to resist attacking and just swinging back. I ignore those replies and hope the person will loosen up and be receptive to learning, 'cuz it sure ain't going to happen with the tone and mood being what it was in the reply.

My only post or comment is, I wish that you would put more outrage towards how the democrats and some RINOS are trying to railroad RUMMY and BUSH on the body armor issue.
I was really outrage by that, how the hypocrite democrats and some RINOS were railroading RUMMY on those troops not having body armor, when ? they were the ones who opposed the funding for the 86 Billion.
