Word For The Day, Wednesday, November 24, 2004

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

gimcrack \JIM-krak\, noun, adjective:
gimcrackery; noun

1. A trivial mechanism; a device; a toy; a pretty but useless or worthless object; a gewgaw.
2. Tastelessly showy; cheap; gaudy.

The pages in the campaign paper trail released thus far give details on what the Democrats' new category of $250,000 super-donors were explicitly promised for their largess, right down to the "exclusive lapel pin" -- a gimcrack Croix de Guerre from the Democratic National Committee.
--Francis X. Clines, "Donor Is Listed as 'Buddhist Temple' in Democratic Documents," New York Times, December 28, 1996.

Etymology: The origin of gimcrack is uncertain. It is perhaps an alteration of Middle English gibecrake, a slight or flimsy ornament.

The Mods aren't taking a day off, I see. i gather from some quotes the zotted troll was pretty vicious.

Don't let it get you down.

I'm sort of killing time as well, since we really have no "schedule" to adhere to today. The bird's in the oven and poor hubby has now gone to make yet ANOTHER trip to the store. He's in charge of the bread machine and when he openned the bag of bread flour....it was infested with those little weevilly things. I absolutely hate those things.

dinner will probably be ready in an hour or so. everything is ready to go, i am just waiting to time it based on the turkey being done. homemade bread, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry dressing, fruit salad, green salad, sauteed mushrooms. and then dessert later tonight. we tried to send xskids and xscousins to see the Incredibles, dropped them off and a half hour later they called bc the theater lost power, they got refunds but they are back underfoot at home. it is nice out, but pretty windy. they are playing football outside now.

Sounds like you're having a full day!!! It started out a really nice day, breezy, but the sun was shining and 72.....jax got out of my hair for about an hour. But now it's gray, windy and 52 and it rained pretty good around 1.

Dinner will be ready when I feel like getting up again and making gravy. Turkey''s been done nearly an hour. squash is in the oven, potatoes are boiling, 2 kinds of stuffing made, just need to heat them up. I'll put the pie in the oven after the stuffing is done and we're sitting down. Already had our sushi, oysters are next!

Sushi and oysters? Is that something you have each year? - We had turkey, cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli/rice/cheese casserole, green beans, deviled eggs, rolls and gravy.......... cherry pie and pumpkin roll for dessert...............everyone is full and nodding off watching the Cowboys and Bears each try to lose....... there can only be one loser so I don't know how this game is going to come out........ ;^)

No on the sushi, hubby happened to stop at a fancy supermarket on his way home last night for a couple of things and saw a small sushi party tray. Since we tend to graze all day Thanksgiving, he thought he would surprise me.

Oysters we could east every day. We had bought a half bushel of local ones last weekend, only an hour out of the water and even after wiping between 6 and 8 dozen in one sitting and I don't know how many more while he was shucking the rest, I still had over a quart of them left.

Some went into one of the stuffings, but most I think went into me!!!

Which reminds me - I've got to find the thread from the other night to thank the FReeper who gave me the recipe for the oyster stuffing.

Went to Thanksgiving over at Russel's MIL's house: 16 total including the two grandedkids.

Good people, good food, good conversation.

(So if a mother-in-law and father-in-law are the parents of your spouse, what's the term for the parents of your son?)

I was going to see if Robt. had already posted something about undoing buttons, but I see nothing on the subject yet. Everyone in my house looks like Slips pussie in post 300 from Tuesday. NOT the one who ate a mouse and was ill.(I wish I knew how to get my pics to do that.)

In addition to the nutritious stuff, we had a drop cake, a pecan pie, an apple pie and a mince meat pie. I could not adequately explain the concept of mince to my son -in- law. This is the same man who made the judge explain-- "And thereto I pledge thee my faithfulness" DURING the wedding service. I never found out what he was afraid he was being asked to do... (but I've had lots of fun thinking about it.)

"I" do not go around in pubic re-posting references to zlippies' pussie posts about her new battery-operated putzsucker !

(But all of the good prints I keep hidden under the mattress ....)

(Robt acts shocked that "anybody" would do such a thong ..... Over the internet no less!)

I saved the now immobile "bundy" cat as my background, and my son felt he had to one up me with this one.
