Admittedly, Sundays are slow days in thread,
Speeds up later on when everyone gets back from their various errands.

And again, welcome.

I sometimes watch the women's Lifetime channel movies while doing chores on the weekend. Yesterday, I was looking forward to several Christmas ones. My word, every one of them had a political theme running through...save the whales or Santa not making violent toys...blah, blah, blah. The most blatant one was this one about a Vietnam vet whose son had died in Desert Shield. He picked up a hitchhiker and brought him home for Christmas Eve and it turned out to be his son in spirit. It was pretty interesting until the son started spouting about how wars were useless and wrong. The new Dolly Parton one was not political...just a bust. LOL

I'm going to dig out my Walton Christmas movie today.

I saw some previews about Dolly's new movie. So you didn't like it? Personally I think the oldies but goodies like It's a Wonderful Life, White Christmas, A Christmas Story etc. are still the best. And the original Alistair Sims "A Christmas Carol" of course.

I've just been around, doing other stuff. I've been cleaning out the garage, getting stuff ready to go to goodwill, and general cleaning. Haven't spent much time on the computer, other than to get some Christmas shopping done. I probably won't be around much today, either. Sometimes I just have to get other thinge done!

Yes, I love Siamese cats. I had one that had been a stray. My sister had gotten her from a vet - someone found her on the streets of Lewiston, Idaho. My sister ended up not being able to keep her, because her (at the time) 3 year old daughter wouldn't leave the cat alone, and the cat was obviously not accustomed to children. So I took her. She was an adult, and maybe five years old at the time. I kept her for 11 years, when she died of some form of cancer. Vet never was able to find out what it was. Anyway, she's been dead for nearly 5 years now, and I still miss her. When it comes time to get another cat, I'm going to get another Siamese. I've been looking at these: Traditional Siamese.

When Dawn and Tyler get here, I'm renting movies. There is just almost nothing fit to watch on TV. The one network that I pretty much felt safe letting Tyler watch was Animal Planet, and I don't get it here because my cable company sucks so bad. We will be gone a lot of the time, too.

I am so sick of a political (read: liberal) theme running through virtually every program. Law and Order:SVU is the absolute worst. Sometimes the liberal themes get so nauseating, I have to turn it off. Last night, I watched The Twilight Zone amd Crocodile Dundee. I absolutely love that movie.

I forget how old Tyler is. We bought the set of "Horation Hornblower" series from, I think, the A & E. They're action/adventure, with no "language", no graphic sex (no sex at all, really). There is violence because of the battle scenes, but it's not the really graphic stuff you see in the R-rated movies. They're great stories and very entertaining. We can watch these when my Mom, sister and niece are watching. They are very sensitive to the content of a lot of the crap on television and movies, but the Horatio Hornblower episodes are very acceptable. Might be a little old for Tyler, though.

Tyler is 7. He loves Star Wars, so I might get the original series and let him keep them. He only has the latest two. He also likes Crocodile Hunter. He is fascinated by weather stuff, too, especially tornadoes. Most of the cartoons out there under the guise of children's programming are either adult themes masquerading as cartoons, or they're so infantile as to insult the intelligence of the average 7 year old, or 3 year old, for that matter. Shows like Sesame Street turned to the dark side with political correctness a long time ago, and when Tyler lived with me, I only let him watch it in small doses. One of his favorite shows was Planet's Funniest Animals, which, of course, I don't get.

Purrrrrrrr! Boy, do those cats look comfortable. Hubby and I gave our dog (Sam the hound dog) a much needed bath this morning so he could dry off before he had to go outside again.

Sam's been sitting on his bed and giving us disapproving looks ever since.

Horation Hornblower is probably a bit old for him, then. They'd be great for older kids, though. You're right about a lot of the other stuff, though. We don't have kids, but we did see a lot of the garbage that passed for kids' programming when we were vising hubby's sister and her son. I couldn't believe the content of the programs, and I couldn't believe that she was letting him watch some of that stuff! My husband said something to her about it, and she just shrugged, and said, "He likes it".

Oh. Interesting criteria for deciding what you're letting your kid put into his head.

"Oh. Interesting criteria for deciding what you're letting your kid put into his head."

Well, it may be a consideration, but certainly not the only one. Kids like a lot of things that aren't good for them. If kids like playing on the highway, should they be allowed to do it? Some of the things they are exposed to on television are just as dangerous to them mentally as playing on the highway would be to them physically, but most parents seem far less conscientious about what their children put into their minds.

One of the things I see too often is young children who are acting out sexually because they've been exposed to pornography. The common parent explanation: "we didn't think they were old enough to understand what was going on." Well, they might not be old enough to understand it, but they are certainly old enough to be intrigued by it AND to act on it.

Certainly liking something IS a criteria, but it seemed to be her ONLY criteria. If he liked it, she let him watch it, because if she turned the channel or put something else on, he'd pitch a fit. I know. I was there. It was really pretty sad.

Aack. Chicago 'burb in Crook Co. I'm sorry to say. I take particular pleasure in my Bush/Cheney bumpersticker. LOL.

We are both native Kansans transplanted here for husbands career 18 years ago. Looking to hopefully be able to move back west again after daughter finishes school.

Kids pitching fits automatically activates my stubborn streak. That applied to my own and it applies to kids on my caseload as well. If Dawn pitched a fit because I changed the channel, I would have turned the thing off completely. End of discussion. I never heard of a child dying or suffering irreparable damage from a temper fit. If they learn that that kind of behavior gets them what they want, well, guess what. They are going to keep behaving that way, and what's worse, they will carry a form of that behavior into the adult world. (Hint: they will vote democRAT).

My middle grandboy used to throw hissy fits. He didn't get what he wanted, but he still threw them anyway. We just walked over him lying on the floor screaming and flailing. Once PaPa told him that it was the best hissy fit he had ever seen him throw. Jeremiah sat up and looked at him as if the say...whoa, this isn't how its supposed to work. LOL

That's exactly what happened to him if hubby and I were watching him for an afternoon. If he were told to do something, and would ignore us because he was, say watching something on the tube or playing a video, the "off" switch was activated. He knew better than to pitch a fit if I told him to do something and then would turn off the tube, because he knew I wouldn't put up with it. He'd mumble and complain under his breath, but oh well. He didn't have a tantrum. Just goes to show that a firm hand goes a long way.

His mother, unfortunately, was just looking for the path of least resistance. She was a "single mom" - the boy never knew his sperm donor father. His mother had a string of boyfriends until she got married about 6 years ago. She had a full time job and was in night school. Her time was divided among boyfriend, job, school and studying, so she didn't have much left over for her little boy. His grandmother, who was frail due to chronic serious illness, took care of him most of the time, and did the best she could. But she wasn't physically able, nor did she have the mental toughness to raise the boy.

It was really hard to see that poor kid go through what he did. Not much we could do, as we didn't spend that much time with him, and we couldn't really discipline someone elses kid.

Since she's gotten married, though, I must say the boy has grown up fairly well (he's 16 now). Too early to tell what kind of adult he'll be.

Tyler isn't given to fits, but Dawn sure was. I used to tell her in a very calm voice, "if you're going to act like that, go in your room where I don't have to listen to you." That usually resolved it pretty quickly. Somehow, the lack of an audience removes the motivation. I wonder how long it took her to realize that I could still hear her. LOL!

Good Afternoon Prairiebreeze .. I also refuse to let the ACLU ruin my Christmas ..

I'm still in the process of making the outside of my house look like Chevy Chase's Christmas Vacation with all the lights. This year I added two lighted deers to my collection .. I'll have to find the picture of my 8ft. Frosty the Snowman to show you *L*

-----------------------

Hey there Libby .. how's it going?

Sorry for popping in an out so much .. I've been on the phone non stop and then had to make a trip down to Philly

My sister Jen and I end up not going down to VA to see my SIL and brother yesterday and decided that next weekend will be better. We figured that she would be wiped out and would need a lot of rest.

When my sister had her tumor removed .. I brought her home from the hospital ... got her set up in bed and she slept for two days straight.

I remember mom kept wanting to go up and see if she was ok and I kept telling mom to just let her sleep since she had none for a week.

Jen said that she felt so much better after those two days. She said that she was so tired that she couldn't even cry.

The doctors let her Darla go home from the hospital Friday afternoon and we had to wait to hear from my older sister real late Friday night on how things were going down there since she and her hubby drove down to visit

They didn't know my SIL was going to be released until they got there .. but it turned out to be a good thing they were there.

My brother wasn't ready for her early release either, so while my sister stayed with Darla .. my brother and BIL went out and bought a new bed with new linens and a new recliner to set up in the first floor spare room.

This way Darla won't have to climb the stairs .. everything she needs is all on one floor.

My sister says Darla looks pretty good considering she just had brain surgery .. but she also looks like hell. She has two black eyes and about hundred staple in her head.

Brain said that he is going to take off from work for the rest of the month. Since he's a teacher and they'll be going on school break soon .. he'll only have to be out of work for 2 weeks.

He said the home care folks are suppose to stop by on Monday and see exactly what kind of care Darla will need at home

Then on Tuesday she goes back to her doctor to see exactly what kind of treatment she will have. Most likely it will be Radiation and Chemo to kill off any remains cancer cells that may be still in her.

Plus she is going to need therapy .. her left side is very week and she slurs her speech.

All in all and considering the week she has had .. things are looking good .. but she still has a long road ahead of her to still go.

Thank y'all again for all the prayers for Darla .. I do so appreciate them
