The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I must say that the best gift I get is the one my eldest girl gets me from the dollar "Holiday Store" they have at school! :-)

You're not Scrooge-ish at all!

I am lucky to come from a family of great gift givers, and we never hint. I can't stand giving or getting something that was on a list of wants, we give a few hints sometimes, but I never answer the question "so what do you want for Christmas?"

My family gives great stuff more often than not. And those that have money spend it. We are pretty fair, not having any rules like some families, and I think there is an understanding that we aren't equally able to spend. Last year, ecurbh and I really had ~no~ money. This year, we're better, but only a little.

I hope this year, you get your drill bits :~D

I feel bad saying all of that because I know the wife really does try hard.

Jr. is an impulse buyer, which is why I have a stuffed Snoopy that snores, a HUGH Redskins mug, a Grinch tie and a tie with the flag of Brazil. That stuff is okay...he's learning.

But sometimes the wife will get me something and I'll just look at it and want to say "have we met?"

"have we met?"

LOL!!! I KNOW it! Steve once got me, for Christmas, and I kid you not...a post card with a picture of Bill Clinton on it. I didn't know whether to cry or slug him. I just sat there appalled.

He said "What? It'll be collector's item someday..."

We've actually done better in the years when money has been tight. It makes us think more and expect less.

Part of our problem now is that we're just not organized enough to deal with shopping before the production is over, so we hit panic mode.

This year, we have managed to put Luke's "big ticket" item on layaway, and we know what we're getting Jr. And, since my Mom is coming to see the show on Saturday and we're not likely to see her again before Christmas, we have their present as well.

We keep saying we'll be better organized next year. And, in spite of all the crap that we've dealt with in the past couple of years, we actually are better organized in some areas. But we're not ahead of the game on present buying. So we get down to the last week and spend more money with less thought. That's the part I really just don't like.

I do (although I couldn't currently tell you where he is).

That was from Jr. and was one of his more thoughtful gifts. I think he was about 4th grade. He knows I've always been a big Peanuts fan.

The most fun I've ever had shopping was for Steve on the first birthday of his that we were together. He had this drill that was older than my grandpa and it sparked and sputtered everytime he used it. He had just bought a house and was doing some stuff around the house and had NO TOOLS to speak of.

I bought him a bunch of small ticket items (screwdriver, level, ruler, pliers etc) put each in a little bag with a saying on it like "When you have a screw loose" or "When you're feeling a little off-level".. etc.

Then the box with the drill bits...

Then the drill.

He was floored.. it was so fun!

See, you're doing good. The only thing that you could do better is to not worry about how you are doing!

I do need to start getting into the mood of goin' shopping. It's hard for me to get started. It means going to town, after all.

Morning...well, almost afternoon everyone!

All I want for Christmas is to have some kind of resolution to my current living situation! *grin*

Good morning! I was lazy Hobbit this morning and didn't get to Hydrobics. I was playing with the color photo printer SSQ got me last Christmas. Am printing out some posters for the Girl Scouts for this weekend's Holly Fair. Found a cute graphic for the "Pictures with St. Nicholas" poster. It's a Santa taking pictures, holding a 'birdie' up so folks can look at it. I'll take a picture of it when we get it put up this weekend.

Do they need scarves? You can get some interesting designs on fleece these days, and make some scarves that don't need any sewing. You just cut across the grain of the fleece so that you get the full 72" length, then cut fringe on either end. The 8th grade class is doing these to sell at the Holly Fair this weekend.

You could also bake something for them! I have a great Gingerbread recipe. Clare is making some in that mini-bundt pan I bought at the King Arthur Flour store. We had the Girl Scout troop over last night and the girls decorated the Cakesicles. Remember that other pan I found? They had a great time!
