The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Ah, people like that.... ok like ME I understand. You just have to get or make them something that they would normally never buy themselves and may or may not need but that will have long term sentimental value because YOU gave it to them. Trust me, there are many things they can use but would never buy themselves. Just about anything that is not electronic or not a tool or you don't use to play a sport probably falls under this category

Or you do like me and cop-out with a gift card to some place like Sears.

I'd agree with you. Debt is no fun!

And...I know when I was a kid, we did have a few "slim pickings" kinda years. But you know, even when we got more stuff, there usually were only one or two toys I actually played with a LOT and as the months went on anyway!

I remember more the things we did together.

But, having said that, I just have this feeling that it will work itself out without us having to borrow and we will have money for what we need. The Lord has a way of providing.

Heh...I've done Amazon gift certs in the past.

I'm trying to think of something I could make for less. But...not sure what.

For Bilbo, I can probably find some sort of sweater for not too much that he'd like. Jim is the hardest. He really only LIKES gadgets...and those I can't afford, and I certainly can't make 'em!

For him, I might cop-out.

Heh, about the sheets being tucked in, I can't stand it. My feet HAVE to be uncovered from the ankles down for me to be comfortable. I had Ruthy in stitches when I was having my sone, because every nurse that came in would cover my feet and in the midst of a contraction I would struggle to kick the sheets off! Ruthy became the official sheet remover until I finally screamed at them " DO NOT COVER MY FEET!!!!" I won't tell you what else I screamed...

Ah, but gadgets always are better with accessories! Belt cases, holsters, carrying straps, battery pouches... Many gadget related items are 'makable'. I love gadgets too and they all need the right accessories to make them even cooler.

His gadgets are mostly things like adapters for his piano keyboard that let him do various odd things on the 'puter...

But I shall ponder what you have said! Might very well be something along those lines that would work...

I'm trying to think of things I could make for Christmas...save some money. As if I have any TO save...

Hey...ain't you got three extra bags of beans?

I hate this endless giving cycle. No matter how many years we say we'll do less, it always ends up being more. Much of it done last minute.

I admit to getting a little Scrooge-ish with regards to presents. I love celebrating the season, but I hate the gift exchange stuff, particularly on the family side.

I particularly have a hard time with people getting me things that aren't practical, because 1) we don't need more crap to sit around and 2) we don't have the cash to throw away on stuff like that.

I try to be specific with hints, but it doesn't help. I asked for a skill saw for three years. Highlighted in the store flyers, pointed it out in the store. I finally got Papa's when we cleaned out the house.

Last Father's Day (whilst the family was all gone) I had said to Jr. at least a dozen times while we were working on Luke's fort "Dad could use a new set of drill bits..."

Instead I got one of those yard tools that's supposed to make things easier. It don't.

So, I know it sounds Bah Humbuggy when I say "don't bother getting me anything" for Christmas, birthday, Father's Day, etc.

But I hate the whole aspect of feeling like I have to search for "just-the-right-gift-that's-the-perfect-thought-of-sentiment-and-looks-like-I-spent-months-figuring-it-out-because-it-has-a-deep-emotional-significance-and-a-meaning-that-reaches-to-a-new-depth-of-spiritual-awareness-and-fondness-of-the-heart"...and I get something and want to say "you really thought I'd want that?"

I would be delighted if we could limit Christmas present exchanges to what Santa leaves under the tree for the boys.

*smiles* Yep!

Yeah, when I was little, I was always kinda apalled that Mom and Dad "gave" each other totally practically gifts. But ya know...the only presents I got last year were a cutting board and a set of knives. Oh, and a few little things. But I soooo appreciated those gifts! Way better than something that just takes up room.

But some people really hate to give gifts like that.

I can kinda "ditto" your remarks, Corin. It sure takes alot out of the season. You don't get what you want, and are buying gifts sometimes because you are 'expected' to or because they bought you one last year .. yada yada yada ..

I would much rather see something during the year that makes me think of someone and surprise them with it for no-apparent-reason.

It's a struggle every year to not let the gift-buying pressure ruin the season for me.

I'm very easy to shop for. My family knows that a gift card at the bookstore makes my year. Of course, inevitably a few still think they just have to get me clothes...

You know, Steve and the boys gave me an OveGlove for Christmas, what? Two years ago? I love it! To this day, I smile when I use it. (Our cookware has metal handles...I'm getting rid of it along with most everything in my house when I can.)
