The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Ah.. yeah... um... so did I. I was eight, I think, at the time. But it was really dull.

Evening Corin, know what you mean about the tree with just the lights, kinda magical almost.

Each year we say that there has to be some way of storing the tree, assembled, with all the lights in place.

You have an artificial tree? But... but... one of the great parts of after-Christmas is lighting the old tree on fire and watching it burn!

Wife had a friend who had a closet built in her living room. The tree is on wheels. She rolls it out when she wants it.

I'm not so much into that but I want a house with the "Christmas switch" so that you can turn on all the candles in the windows with one switch. Homebuilders around here will do that for you.

It'll be especially important after the boys move out...(and we actually have to plug the durn things in)

When you leave your tree up from the day after Thanksgiving until Ephiphany, you have the possibility of watching it burn with the decorations still on it.

Good night Clara. Good night all.

I'm thinking if my family doesn't put it up until the 19th (which is the plan) they'll keep it up the February.

Darn health and safety folk, keeping us from putting candles on the Christmas tree!

We had real trees for 28 years; From 1976 to 2000 we would take the old trees to the Missouri Department of Conservation Wildlife Area near us where they were bundled and weighted and used for fish habitat in ponds and lakes.

Well, as long as you're making an informed decision!

Fish habitats? Huh.

We used our big umbrella plant for our only Christmas in Indiana. We were going down to MS for Christmas, so we didn't bother with a tree. I did sew some soft felt ornaments to hang on it, though, cause Paul had started walking that October, and I knew he'd probably toddle over and grab a couple of them. For years I put the soft ornaments on the bottom and my breakable ones higher up. Still do it, out of habit I guess, but we'll be ready when the grandkids start toddling over and yanking the tree!

That's wonderful about your policeman Santa.I began my St. Nick collection with a handmade old world Father Christmas, wearing a light blue coat. Come to think of it, it kinda reminds me of Gandalf, now. I got him, though, cause he looked for all the world like my Daddy, who had been dead 10 yrs. that Christmas. It's still my favorite.

'Morning.

It's nice and sunny here. I've got my boarding pass all printed out. Just hope the snow stays away until I get home.

Stoopid weather!

Good Morning All - quiet on Gypsygirl's walk, the church bells commenced ringing about halfway through. Wonderful sound anytime of the year, but seems so appropriate now.

Another cuppa coffee or two and we're going to try to finish out the tree. Sorting through the ornaments last year helped quite a bit, most of them have a story to tell, places seen, memories of years gone by and yet holding forth hope and good cheer for the years to come.

Well, we are not yet in any shape for a walk, but I have been out to feed the horses their breakfast.

We had our first frost last night, everything's crunchy under foot this morning.

This coming weekend we are going up to the beach house to make lefse, we won't be decorating the tree up there until the week after ;~D
