The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Yeah, you should definitely go. It had all these unexpected lines (subtly conservative worldview? I think maybe...) and like I said the visuals were all great.

Oh, I'm so glad to have a computer again. Apparently I now have almost 10,000 words. I know what I'm doing this weekend.

I'd kinda like to get way ahead on words if I can, since the Thanksgiving holiday is coming up. On the one hand, that will mean more time when I could be writing...but on the other hand, I probably won't want to at all. I'd like to at least have one day when I can goof off if I so choose.

Of course, I'm not at all sure how this is gonna work for us. Dad has to work and so does Margaret, and Dad doesn't even get off until seven in the evening...so we may not actually have a real Thanksgiving until Saturday. Or we could do as Dad suggested and meet them at the cafeteria. Heh...not sure I'm exactly in love with that idea...

You could host a small dinner for them that's around...

Don't know what my Thanksgiving plans are. A lot of writing, probably.

There was a chain-letter on my car this morning. I think. It was in Spanish but I'm pretty sure that's what it was.

Chain-emailers should be punished with revocation of internet privileges. Don't they know spammers love chain letters? It's a mine of valid email addresses.

Picked all the medium to large sized Habaneros, even though they're green. From what I read briefly on Google, they're still just as hot just not orange. We're supposed to have our first freeze tonight.

I also brought in my potted chiltepin. Gonna trim it down and hope for the best with it, but I will be surprised if it lives the winter through.

We'll probably do something small on the day, and then have a real dinner on Sunday or something when everyone is around.

It'll be better than a lotta other Thanksgivings I've had! Two in particular stand out as lousy, though of course in the scheme of things, I've had a very nice, cushy life.

And one was comical-sad mostly, rather than just bad. I was supposed to be on temporary duty, but was actually at my home base. I could have invited myself over to someone's house, most likely, but I was too shy to. So...I went and got a turkey TV dinner, a box of chocolates, and a good movie. It wasn't so bad.

My Thanksgivings have previously been all the same. Just happy, family events. My mother would get bothered with her mother, usually, but that's about it. Just a nice family time. I'll miss it.

This year is gonna feel strange because NEITHER of the older boys will be home. Usually at least Paul was home because he was, and still is, in school closer than David. This year, David is busy at school, and Paul is going to the wedding of a friend in Chicago. They'll both be home for Christmas within a month of Thanksgiving, though, so that'll be fun.

Yeah, I'm leaving for home on the 18th of December. It really doesn't make sense to go back for Thanksgiving. I'll just stay here, sleep in, catch up on homework, and write.

How long of a break do you get for Christmas?

Ugh...just had two students in a row call with different problems with Win 98 machines. Troubleshooting those over the phone is HARD, 'cause I'm relying on (vey shaky) memory...don't have a system here I can walk through things with to make sure I'm on the same page.

I don't like supporting those things. And the first student wasn't willing to work with me, neither. He couldn't connect to the network, we determined he wasn't getting an IP address, but he said he couldn't possibly try a different cable or network jack, 'cause it's too hard to get to things "back there". Well then...it's too hard for me to help ya, buddy. Sorry.

I get about four weeks. I'm leaving the day after finals end and coming back a week early.

Ouch, no fun. We almost always can go to the user, or have him bring a laptop to us, so no working blind, thankfully. And, if they're not willing to work with you, tough luck, they can have a broken computer.

We provide limited tech support for student machines in the residence halls...if it's something hardware we tell 'em no dice, but for other stuff we at least attempt to help, especially if it's network related. But we don't do house calls unless there's a busted jack or something like that. That's something we have trouble getting across sometimes. They ARE allowed to bring machines down here if it's something network related that they're having problems with...which also ends up meaning spyware and malware, since we deal with a lot of students with browser hijackers.

At least this year my boss finally said we don't work on a machine unless it's up to date on antivirus software. That's saving us major headaches, especially since we don't get many "repeat offenders". It DOES mean than most students with old machines that haven't done anything to maintain them get upset because there's not much we can do for them.

Good policy...

95% of the machines I deal with are department machines, which means they are always up to date and have a virus scan run daily. Very few spyware problems on a daily basis... which reminds me, I got Norton loaded back on but I've got to add Spybot and Ad-Aware tonight before I start surfing merrily.

I am just going to drive over to Chicago for TurkeyDay. A homeschooling family there is almost family to me and I go there when I can't make a holiday with the main family unit. I think they bug me more about finding a woman than by normal family does.

Heh... that's nice. I don't have any "substitute family" here, and my two galpals are both going home, so I think it will be potluck with the other stuck-heres for me.

The second Thanksgiving David was at CMU, I started looking into plane flights home. It was gonna cost over $400! He was coming home within three weeks after Thanksgiving anyway, so I called him and asked if he minded NOT coming home until Christmas. He was relieved that I suggested it because he had several projects due in the week after Thanksgiving and was concerned that coming home would make it harder to get them done. Each year after that, he didn't come home for T'giving, but stayed for 3 weeks at Christmas.

I could probably get home for, oh, $250, but that's too much for me and for a week... and two days of that consumed by travel... it's really not worth it. I'd be tempted to go home over spring break but I can't do that, either (required to stay on for my job, but I knew that coming in).
