October 18, 2004 | Doc Savage

Posted on 10/18/2004 4:59:26 PM PDT by Doc Savage

My brother and I were discussing the most exciting "Play" in baseball. Here is my list (excluding a no-hitter and perfect game):

1. Stealing Home

2. Inside-the-Park Home Run

3. Unassisted Triple Play

4. Grand Slam

5. Suicide Squeeze

6. Double Steal

7. Throwing a runner out at the plate

I love when the 1st baseman hides the ball after a pick-off attempt then tags the runner out when he steps off the bag to take his lead.

Jim Edmonds robbing the other guy of a home run by running, leaping, and pulling back the ball from over the fence.

suicide squeeze is by far the best, closely followed by the play at the plate...

I was a catcher for all my high school years and American Legion ball after that...I had the pleasure of being on the receiving end of a couple of suicides and plenty of plays at the plate...it's a direct one on one play...you and the ball vs. the runner. Nothin' finer...

Foul-tipped catch out by the catcher who then runs down the runner who was trying to steal home, then overthrows 3rd when the man on 2nd tries to steal it(after tagging 2nd), only to have the alert shortstop backing up 3rd snag the overthrow and nail the runner at the plate.

The most exciting plays are those that come at crucial times.

To your list I'd add the CF play for an out in a big park when he runs a ball down that looks over his head. For some reason I've always thought a fast CF in an expansive park is a formula for exciting plays.

Having Enrico Caruso sing the National Anthem.
Being mauled by a tiger while sliding into second.

(OK dfwgator has seen the Naked Gun a few too many times.)

In might opinion a suicide squeeze is the very exciting but quite possibly the most exciting will be Houston's victory over the Yanks in the World Series in 5 games....;>)
