Zicam knocks out a cold if you start using it when you first feel the symptoms coming on. I have used it for 2 years and swear by it.

If you do end up with the cold, it doesn't last as long nor is it as severe.

Hands are the key. Keep them away from your face. Don't eat food with your fingers such as french fries, pizza hamburgers, etc... unless they are clean. Carry foil wrapped packets of hand wipes and use at table just before eating. If you eat at serve yourself buffet style places, remember the ladle handles are crawling with bacterias and viruses.

You need to study up on Colloidal Silver a bit more (especially this metals idea you have). I take 1100ppm of CS...and NEVER have had any probs with it at all. Anything under 500ppm will NOT kill bacteria or viruses. Its been studied and those little varmints continue to live. So take the right ppm.

Sambucol will knock down flu, colds, congestion so fast it's unbelievable, kills viruses in a heart beat.

There are several other things I take daily; but to keep sickness away CS and Sambucol is what I'd take when you feel something is coming on.

Yeah, keep CLEAN. Showers/baths DAILY. Be obsessive. Doorknobs, computer keyboards, pillowcases -- CLEAN. Get a cheap air purifier on eBay for the room that kills germs. I remember I got sick A LOT in my college dorm, too, and it is a bummer. I did none of the above and paid for it. With many many more immigrants coming here, they bring a lot of diseases that our immune systems aren't ready for. Echineacia and Goldenseal, too, helps a lot.

OH THE BIGGEST THING?

GET YOUR SLEEP. Your immune system is depressed when you don't get your eight hours --- and I don't mean eight hours from three am to eleven AM
Bodyclocks are set to the sunlight -- you need to get to bed at Midnight as much as you can.

(Needless to say, alcohol also depresses the immune system if overdone so watch that too.)

Hit the books, kid, and excel at your God given talent.

Re colloidal silver: One night I noticed my cat had a nasty abcess on her neck. It was too late to get to a vet and I had an early appointment for work the following morning. I applied CS to the wound and put a couple of drops in her mouth.

I didn't get home till late the next evening. The first thing I did was get the cat and take a look at her neck. I could not find the injury. It had closed and dried up completely in 24 hours.

It never occurred to me to use CS as nasal drops for colds and flu.

Vitamin C (1000 mg tablets twice a day when you start feeling sniffly), and ColdEeeze with zinc gluconate glycine. And wash your hands with soap after touching ANYTHING that someone else with germ-laden hands might have touched, be it handrails, items at the bookstore, or the dorm commode handle. (I keep a little bottle of anti-bacterial no-rinse gel in my purse for occasions when we can't wash our hands after touching something, like temptations at the toy aisle in Target. No colds in our house for a couple of years now.)

Flu:
Oscillococcinum by boiron (yes thats how its spelled,
sounds like ahsolokium I think)- three doses will usually
kick flu to the curb. Both the Wife and I have used it and
it works wonderfully.

Common Cold:
  Echinacea/Goldenseal extract liquid - I take 3/4 a dropper
in about 2 to 3 tb water if I feel a cold coming on. It
tastes awful. Works most the time.

Sinus:
Olive Leaf - good like said above.

Alkalol - Snort it. I'm not kidding. You get it at the
drug store, brown bottle, yellow label, they should know
what it is. Put a cotton ball over the mouth of the bottle,
tip and wet, then put the cotton ball up to your nostril
(block other) and inhale profusely. Be prepared for some
burn and then be ready to blow your nose cause this will
melt everything but your brain out of your head.

Dairy Products - Supposedly in some people it will bother
the sinuses. My sinuses do get a bit nasty if I eat Dairy
so I just stay away from it:( Chriopractor kept telling me
I might have a low grade allergy to dairy, unfortunately he
was right ... dang I miss milkshakes and pizza.

For prevention: Wash your hands, keep the room clean (relatively speaking for a dorm), have paper cups in the bathroom, use Lysol spray or other disinfectant on surfaces that get hands on them (remote controls, door knobs, light switches, faucet knobs etc.), when you can open the windows and air out the room, eat well and stay well rested.
If you have caught something: Rest as much as you can the first day, pamper yourself with hot chicken soup and tea with lemon and honey, cough/sneeze into your sleeve instead of your hands. If you have a fever don't bring it down too fast - let it do it's work - but don't let it get too high. Don't go out until 24 hours after the fever is gone. That's for your sake in a weakened state as well as everyone else. Wash your bedding, towels etc. as soon as you feel well enough.

Bleach - Keep a gallon of bleach around.

Fill up the sink with warm water and a drop (no more) of antibacterial palmolive than a cap (1 or 2 teaspoons) of bleach. Wipe everything down twice a day with this soapy bleachy water. (Get lemon or citrus Clorox if you don't like the smell)

Isn't there a cure for the rhinovirus (the common cold) as of a year or two ago? I believe you need a perscription though.

Otherwise, I found in my college days that large amounts of caffeine mostly cancelled the effects of a cold, even though it didn't cure it.

I have sinus problems from having them physically damaged, crushed.

Lately,I've taken St.John's Wort a few times to try to calm myself down. Each time I took it,my bad sinus' were noticeably relieved.

Don't know if SJW is even supposed to do this but it's been a nice side effect for me.

Colloidal Silver works great. I also have upper respiratory problems and am using it right now to fight off a cold.

I've found that getting rest is very important. It's hard to do, but if I don't rest I don't get well.

Also, Chamomile tea is an excellent anti-inflamatory. I always keep it around. It's great for sore throats and it will cure pink eye. Just put the (unsweetened) tea into the eye.

Of course, drinking the Chamomile tea gets it into your entire system but you can also use it topically. Just put the tea bag on the inflamed area. It will also make you a little sleepy so you rest well.

For sore throats there's a tea called "Throat Coat" which I buy at the local health food store.

I have a similar upper respiratory/ sinus/ allergy etc. history.

Have benefitted from ZICAM nasal swabs and mouth spray.

And from the cough drops with honey--Robitussin used to make them with real honey in the center. Haven't found for a long time.

The cough drops cherry flavored that have zinc in them also have been helpful--especially if use them immediately at first hint. But both the ZICAM and the zinc cough drops have lessened the severity and duration of such uglies, for me.

An Air filter in my bedroom also seemed to help.

Get a nasal saline spray, squirt up your nose morning and evening, turn your head upside down and sniff in hard to get it all through the sinuses. Stand up and blow it all out.

I used to get at least 2-3 sinus infections a year that turned into bronchitis and required antibiotics. In addition, I virtually always had a low-grade infection in my sinuses, one of which eventually poked its way through to the roots of a molar, requiring a root canal.

Since I started the saline spray program (which I actually usually only do in the mornings, unless I'm feeling something coming on), I've gotten almost entirely off antihistamines that I used to not be able to live without. Now I take just half a Unisom tablet every night (sold as a sleep aid, but actually a long-acting antihistamine), and I'm fine day and night. Haven't had even a little bitty sinus infection for three years.

Oh, and once you've got one of the nasal-spray-pump bottles, just keep refilling it with saline solution sold in large bottles for contact lenses. Costs about 5% as much that way.

And get plenty of sleep -- it does wonders for your immune system.

If I get a cold just before bed drink lemon juice with tons of sugar (so it's drinkable), a hefty (and I mean hefty) shot of brandy, and a lot of hot water. This will put you to sleep soundly which will do the world of good for the cold. The only other thing I ever take is ibuprofen if I also have a head-ache - but then I rarely fall victim to heavy colds.

Sounds like you're getting 'freshers flu'; the gathering together of loads of people who all bring their own collections of viruses which have a lovely time multiplicating in residences. It usually dies out after a while though.
