Freeper etiquette?
Self

Posted on 10/06/2004 6:43:43 AM PDT by BiscuitEater

Yes, I'm a "Newbee". But I have been reading Free Republic for almost a year now. I recently started posting. I want to be a part of this Blog but don't want to do as so many Newbee's have done and not follow the rules. I think I have a grasp on HOW to post and WHERE to post. My question now is about some of the terms used. Hence: Bump,Ping..ect. Is there a list's of Free Republic...or ANY "Blog terminology" I can go to for these questions? Thanks.

A suggestion might be to forgo posting until you have been here long enough to absorb some Freeper culture. It could save you a lot of grief.

Ive been here for awhile and have chosen to remain in the responder category. Most news items are pretty well covered and a posting from me would likely be a duplicate and those irritate me.

Yes, I'm a "Newbee".

What's a newbee? A newbie with a beeber?

All kidding aside, the guidelines are fairly simple. Don't post something into a sidebar unless it belongs there - don't post news into activism/chapters, don't post editorials into Breaking News, etc. Don't create a new thread around a short opinion - that's called a vanity post and it clutters up the form - try to find an existing thread to post your opinion into (if you have an opinion on the VP debate, for example, post it into an ongoing thread on the VP debate).

Realize we get a lot of trolls here, and ease your way into posting to build up credibility. Do your homework and be able to support your opinions with factual references. Maintain a sense of humor. Do all that and you'll do fine.

By the way, this is not a blog but a message board.

Oh, and one other thing - search before posting a news item. Take a keyword from the title and search against existing posts. If you find the article is already posted, go and "bump" it into latest posts by posting a response. If you want to draw the attention of other posters to that article, post a "ping" response to them by entering a list of names into a response. When they do a self-search, they'll see the article.

Biscuiteater states that he has been on FR for one year. Just how long were you using FR before you became aware of the "culture". Should someone use FR for two, five, ten years before they are culture aware.

Please respond with your specific ideas as to how long a newbie should hang around to acquire your preconceived amount of FR culture. Should this be monitored by FR administration and no one allowed until they have the right amount of "culture"? A final exam, a thesis, whatever...

From one newbie to another -

1) stick with posting replies - wait to post entire threads until you've found something that is NOT ALREADY POSTED!

2) spell check, grammar check, and the like are your friend.

3) Welcome to FR!

First off, FR is not a blog.

Nor is it a "chatroom", as members of the MSM are fond of calling it.

It's a discussion forum.

Not a blog; right; but a forum; and not without interjections of rudeness.

Welcome - nonetheless - to Free Republic, B.E.; just join in and enjoy. Don't worry about the 'pings and bumps'. . .you will soon figure it out. If you have been lurking for a year; you know at least the basics. So come on in!

Vanities and General Interest.
General Interest (Chat)

"All non-sourced non-news threads are posted here. This doesn’t mean your one thought is a thread by itself. Lately, we have been seeing articles posted that should be comments made on the main article. Your comment/vanity article will be pulled or moved to General Interest (Chat). Vanities should be limited to the mission of Free Republic."
.......................................................
This means one has to click on the proper place at the top of the sidebar BEFORE posting an article in order to avoid placing personal/blogger or chat(Vanity}/general interest in news. Prepare for "incoming fire"if one posts one's special thoughts in breaking news,etc....
Read the mod thread I linked and ask questions in chat.
