When I was in high school, UPC codes were supposedly the mark of the beast (the vertical bar at the beginning, the one in the middle, and the one at the end are always longer than the others, and were rumored to be given a value of 6). I'm still waiting for the next shoe to drop.

Before that, people were talking about check-cashing rules being secretly prepared to require marks on the body for identification.
