Interesting that such a quake is assigned a 3.9 magnitude. Check the main page of ORF, the state television of Austria. Hard to find a reference to this major event.
Needless to say that in the surrounding countries there's absolutely no mention of it.

Approx. 1,452 quakes on this map of the U.S. that includes Puerto Rico; and that is just in the past week. I have been watching the quake info. since about January; at that time the quakes per week on this same map were averaging about 200 - 300. I find it odd that so little is being mentioned about the number of quakes.

How is a 3.9 magnitude quake in the Alps a "major event?"

No big deal. The 6.0 and the aftershocks following it are responsible for the higher count. I believe there have been over 800 aftershocks. That's not unusual, really. Anytime there is a largish earthquake, the count on that map will jump.

Particularly when the aftershocks are for a US mainland event; all of the aftershocks for a 6.0 in Antartica or somewhere won't even be recorded, much less counted, as they area isn't instrumented.

The title of this thread explains why this quake is a major event. Now, as I already mentioned above, the immediate question is, :
- why is this major event assigned a 3.9 mag ?

No. If you have a lot of old buildings that don't regularly undergo shaking by earthquakes, you don't get the susceptible ones culled. When even a smaller earthquake comes along, bam, there's a lot of damage.

Because the Trilateral Comission in league with the Bilderbergers consulted Satan and decided to list the magnitude as 3.9 instead of its true 10.5 magnitude?
To: Strategerist
I don't think that is entirely true.

Someone was shot with a .223 caliber bullet.
That bullet did damage similar to a .308.
Therefore, the .223 actually was a .308.
