Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Oh no we love pictures:)
I've never heard of a Pintabian???
Does your daughter do some type of English riding? compete?
Becky
We had the little guy trailored from Minnesota to NY. Actually, I must say...my daughter paid for it all....even a barn expansion.
This is a pic of our little guys Daddy.
Been there, done that, on that "just over the hill route". Ten hours later, and you finally make it back to camp.
That's obvious - sometimes too obvious - but I NEVER ride alone, not even at the barn in the ring. Somebody's always around.
A girl I knew died because she fell off her horse trail riding by herself (she wasn't wearing a helmet either). No idea if she could have been saved if someone had been nearby (head injury) but they didn't find her for days (her horse was found quite a distance from where she was ultimately found) so we'll never know.
Sorry if I sound a little high-headed, but with THAT experience in my past, if I can't get a riding buddy I just don't go. (The Boy Scouts teach that three is a minimum for any trip - one to stay with the injured person and one to go for help.)
What is his name? A little girl at my stables has a black and white paint. She named him Oreo:')
Beautiful pictures, mountains, and all, what a nice place to ride. Was it cold that morning? Congrats to Sonny on his first endurance ride.
I have a neighbor with a black and white paint named Oreo:)
Becky
He's beautiful!
Is the place with the 5th wheel your property? Is the one with the deer your house?
:') Okie sure is shining now. His spots really faded out this summer. I'm not sure if it's new hair, the oil, or just him but he's looking good.
If I didn't ride by myself, I'd only get to ride about once a month. If I only rode when there could be 3 of us, I'd ride about once a year. You know most people just "talk" about riding, few do it on a regular basis. I know quite a few ladies with horses who could ride with me, but they don't. They always have an excuse, some pretty lame. Long time ago I got tired of running down the list of people trying to find someone to ride with.
I agree with you that riding alone is not the best way, but if it's the only way you can ride, then the choice is made.
I take a cell phone with me.
Becky
Probably a little of all of it:)

We stay in the camper (the 5th wheel). I'm standing by it taking pics towards the road. I got about 50 feet before than ran off. We had planned on setting up panels 12x12 to bring our horse up but now I need to think how much space I need for 2 of them.
Is there a riding club or something similar near you? My daughter and I had a problem with finding 3 people to kayak, until we joined the local kayak and canoe club. They sponsor multiple trips on any given weekend in the summer, and the trips at our skill level always have two very experienced paddlers leading the trip. Even in the winter there are a few die-hards out paddling (though most interest shifts to coastal kayaking). We could paddle every weekend if we wanted to, and there's even a weekday paddling group that keeps in touch by Email.
They were kindof 'whup and ride' type folk! But when we are beggin' for rides from others, we can't be as choosey as we'd like about first trails. Tiff and her son were always begging to run a little. They played games with each other, they are real rough-house types. The others only went along with them once.... and though Bay didn't like having them run off, he'll tolerate it, and I just body-blocked Cyn, who seemed OK with it because Bay was there. Then they'd come runnin' back.
We asked if Cyn had done water crossings and bridges when we were looking at her, and the owner said yes. The trouble with the ditch we crossed first was that it was only about three feet wide, and it came by surprise. It was narrow and steep coming down into it, and ecurbh and I were at the middle of the pack with him in front of me. If we'd had more time to think about it and fewer horses backed up behind us, I'd have had him get off and lead her across, just to be on the safe side. But we just came down in and she danced two steps and leaped --- and then she was scrambling up the other side with ecurbh still with her. All I could do was say "great job stayin' on there honey!" The rest of the day there were only puddles, some large, some small, and most horses will try to walk around those. The rest of the ditches were really just tank traps full of water that we could go around. I told ecurbh to not fight her too much about it, that we could work on that later. She was lurching too skittishly around them if he tried and it wasn't worth the danger of unnecessary battles yesterday.
The best place around here to train for water is that wide creek ecurbh and I posed for the picture in, and we'll take her back there to work on it.
Maybe Cyn didn't know what to do. Were others jumping it?
I don't think most of them jumped it, but I really couldn't see ahead. I just don't think he expected it, and now he will ;~D
ROTFL! It ain't my dog lady! Imagine his thoughts when you said he'd have to clean up the mess!
LOL! Reminds me of the classic Inspector Clouseau scene.
"Excuse me, does your dog bite?"
"No."
~he tries to pet the dog, and it snaps at him~
"I thought you said your dog does not bite!"
"That is not my dog."
