The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I don't like opening and shutting gates, just to go in to feed.

Well, now that it is actually all done, we can come up with a routine to normalize. We'd been changing the routine on them all the time and haven't done it the same way twice since Cyn arrived and shook up the old rules.

We can feed grain through the wall into each stall, and hay at night into the stall feeders. In the morning, they get grain in the stalls, but they get their hay outside in the lean-to and they get locked out of the stalls. This is the only part of this new layout that is less efficient than what I had before. Now, there is a wall between the hay and outside that you can't walk through, so ecurbh has to hand me hay over the wall and it is a two person job. Either that or I'd have to walk all the way out the front door and around with an armfull of hay for three horses.

A gate through the back wall at one of the stalls would fix that, but there is nothing overhead there to brace it to. Oh well...

The nice part is that Bay's door can now be left open all night, and he'll go out to pee and poop, but he won't leave his ladies so he comes back in. His stall stays clean, and he isn't kicking to get out to pee at 0:dark:30.

Miss Cyn has horrid manners at gates and around food, she'll run right over the top of you, and slapping her has no effect. She's really funny that way. Nothing scares her! I can stand in a gateway and wave my arms, Bay and the pony would stay away, Cyn would plow right into me. Never seen such a horse that was unscarable. Well, after she ran me over yesterday morning, I surprised her last night with a crop to the neck to back off. This morning, she was a perfect angel :~D At least she learns fast.

Our friend Tiff, that loaned ecurbh the horse before, will come by and pick us up around 11:30.

Had the same problem with a mare at our barn.

Same cure. Works every time.

(I don't like to hit 'em, but it's like spanking, sometimes it has to be done. And a 1300 pound horse in a bratty mood is a lot more dangerous than a 30-pound kid!)

The funny thing with this mare is that merely 'feigning' to whack her is not enough. You can hop up and down and shout and slap her with your hand all day... You actually have to hit her with something that hurts to back her off. It's just a huge difference from Bay, who'll take off blowing and snorting if I so much as stomp in his direction and make ssssssshhhhhhh-ing sounds.

Maybe there is such a thing as "too sacked out" ;~D

Hair your barn looks great and very efficiant.

Well, it's up and down with him. He hasn't ate his grain this morning. I let him out again in the yard and he has been out picking at the grass. We are leaving in a few minutes to go to Jenny's for Blakes birthday party. So he's locked back up in his run. See how he does this afternoon. He got another dose of antibiotics.

I don't think he is missing Trash. We've had plenty of horses come and go around here, Never been a problem before. Besides he was never in the run next to Trash so he wasn't attached to him. If anyone should miss him it would be Harley. Personally, I don't think horses do miss another one for more then a day or so. I've never had one act like they miss one.

Good. You are still here. ( i thought you were leaving this weekend). I wanted to ask how you webb TV works. Is it thru satellite or do you also have a hard drive? We are going to set up satellite at the lake. I have aol connections but my space is limited and I don't really want more equipment in the camper.

I looked around for a chicken walking around bowlegged:)

Hahaha. Sorry I haven't been around. I was entertaining and cider pressing. I have a nice gallon of home made apple cider now.

This is my favorite. I can't get it to enlarge though. Look at the road. There are 3 deer. The left side of the property is the 20 feet my neighbor has wanted to buy for 4 years. The land across the street is what I have been trying to get the owner to sell me 20 acres for 4 years.:') The right side of the property is where I wanted to put panels for a round pen so I could bring Okie. Now that I have Sarah Lee I'm having to re-think that though.

Good Afternoon everyone,
Sounds like Rusty is better today. The stalls look great. And Esther, another great picture.

Sonny had his first endurance ride today, 30 miles in the rain. He came in 3rd out of eight horses, vet checked at all A's both mid way and at the finish. He did the ride in 4hrs 25minutes, including the hour hold at the first vet check. The only problem he had was that he is barefoot and the ride rules required shoes so easy boots, which he hated, and which caused him to slip terribly in the mud. Finally, 1/3 of the ride over, we got permission to pull them.

Pictures coming.

30 miles in one day? What all does he have to do for endurance riding?
