Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
What do you think he's worth now, with your uncertainties?
What would he be worth 'cured'?
What was the limit on the donation deduction?
The limit was $1500.
When I think about pricing a horse, the first thing I think about is their age. If the horse is young, you've got alot of years of use left in them. Second I look at how they handle, third, breeding, papers, no papers etc.
'With' uncertainties about his health, but wouldn't effect what they would use him for I'd think he should be worth $3000. He's young, 6, he has no papers, but handles well, especially with just being led around.
If he was "cured", $5000.
Becky
Well, then here's the way I'd process the options... You could take the $1500 ~deduction~ and be out from under him with the added piece of mind, probably, that he is in a good home where he won't be abused.
If you are really wanting to sell, because he isn't worth having at your place because you are fatigued of the problems and he is keeping you from doing something else, you could sell him as-is, with full disclosure. Some people, like me, are optimists... and they might take what they consider to be a good deal, thinking that they could work him through it, or they don't think they work a horse hard enough for his sweating issue to be an issue. Honestly though, even with him being as good a looker as he is, he'd have to be a bargain, and with him being at the stage where all you can say is "I am not absolutely sure the sweating issue is cured and he hasn't eaten for a week" you won't get more than the $1500 for him.
Or you could invest in some more veterinary care to find out for sure what (or if) he has a definable problem, treat him, and still sell him with a clean bill of health and also at increased value because of it. His past problems are really minor and hard to spot for a buyer. If at the time you marketed him he were eating and he could sweat good, you could sell him without having to overstate the problems of the past, with a clean conscience, for whatever price you could get.
I am not trying to say that you should mask problems, but rather that if you could have him vetted and treated for any difficulties they found, you could likely get him to where he might be just fine for somebody else, and yet when you look at him, all you'd still think of are problems.
The downside of either, is that his problems may re-occur, and the buyers may either dump him or fail to care for him or abuse him. Do you trust other horsemen to do right by him, or is that something you think about? I do, that's why I won't easily sell this pony. But I'm one of them softies, and I don't trust other people to be like me.
More questions than answers.... but that's the rambling path I took. ;~D
I thought of getting him 'fixed' of this current problem and then selling him without mentioning his past problems. But several things come to mind. I've had that done to me, in the case of the one I traded him for, I don't want to send him somewhere where he won't be taken care of if the problem comes up again, and I am trying to build a reputation of selling good horses. I guess I'm a softie too:). That's why I never sold Belle. The only place I would feel good selling her is an auction barn, and I just can't do that.
But the flip side is, he IS such a good horse, that if the problem he has isn't going to come into play, then it's not a problem. I wouldn't say he is beginner rider kid broke, but a kid, or adult with even a bit of experience could ride him. The only reason he is not beginner broke is he will stop on you once in awhile and try to turn and go home:). He doesn't get crazy about it, but I think if you ever let him get by with it, it would get worse. He just stops and either backs up on you, or goes sidewise. A good tap with a spur straightens him right up. And he will do things like stop at EVERY puddle and act like he is going to drink, or wonder off trail like he is going to pee. But then doesn't. Just stands there. A beginner might be apprehensive of being firm about making him straighten up. Then the problem would escalate.
I can't afford to keep a horse I can't use. They are too expensive to feed and maintain. I know I'm on the high end of what my horses are worth. But if I can use them, I don't have a problem not selling them. I'm not in a hurry to sell. So I can wait for a buyer willing to pay the higher price.
I don't think I would feel right not telling his past.
Well, it's feed time again. He's had access to the front yard, where the best grass I have is, and he is standing in his run, looks like asleep.
Becky
Having said all that, I will probably keep him at least till next year. If I get him over this, and no more problems then I'll sell him, even if it means lowering the price to do it. I really do think I don't want to keep him.
Becky
Understood.
We'll see how all this plays out over the coming months then... I hope he gets healthy... It leaves you with so many more good options.
I think it weighs 1/2 pound:)
Becky
Hey do you know if you incubate a double yoker do you get twins?
Becky
Did the picture of the egg show on your computer. It did on mine, but not on the webtv.
Becky
Yep... I can see it... that's a big egg!
Biggest one I've ever seen:)
I don't know why it shows on the computer but not my web. I've never had that trouble before. It's taking forever to load the page when I reload, but the picture never shows up.
Becky
I just read an article that said the biggest chicken egg on record weighed 12 oz, and was 12 1/4 inches around. Ouch:)
It was laid by a chicken in Russia, a breed I've never heard of.
Becky
We took the gate off that was here and moved it around to the exit, along with the other gate recycled from Bay's old stall. Put up just two rails here so that we can slip between the rails to move from stall to stall. I don't like the long way around ;~D
Bay watches ecurbh pour the grain in the bin. ;~D
Sorry for all the dust on the lens, was a dirty job ;~D
Wow. that chicken must have had quite a time laying that egg.
Looks good. I know what you mean about walking around the long way. I always put my hot wires up high enough that they are easy to duck under. I don't like opening and shutting gates, just to go in to feed.
Rusty ate almost all his afternoon feed yesterday, by last night at feeding time. Maybe the anitbiotics are working? Do they work that fast? or maybe he was getting better anyway, or maybe he just wanted out in the yard:)
Becky
I looked around for a chicken walking around bowlegged:)
Becky
Good morning
Becky
He ate all his last nights feed too, and a flake of hay. Guess whatever it was is passing.
Becky
Good morning!
Well, glad to hear Rusty seems better. Is he still seeing the vet today or will you hold off now?
