The Hobbit Hole XV - Pass them by! Pass them by!
See our freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net home page! ^

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Pass them by! Pass them by!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Dang, Bush is good. When Clinton wanted to change the headlines he'd just blow up an aspirin factory...

The President has friends in HIGH places. ;o)

(Heh, my mom's having a birthday that ends in "0"...)

Then she's 10 yrs. younger than my younger sister who is a year younger than I. When my sister turned 40, I had flowers sent to her office. I called the florist, and told them I wanted them to send dead flowers in an arrangement and why. The girl just laughed. When Joanne got back from lunch that day, everyone in the office started telling her to look to see who sent the flowers cause they wanted to know. She just laughed because she just KNEW it had to be me! ;o)

Gotta figure out something to do for her 50th. Got a really CRUEL, but funny, card already. It's from the point of view of someone in the back seat of a car looking out the front of the car. You can just see a woman's startled right eye in the rear view mirror looking at the road behind. "Death" is standing in the road, and the card reads "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear".

It is hilarious!

I had an attack of "let's prove I can be feminine". Baking cookies right now to take to the code and anime party tonight (me and my two galpals.)

Heh - C. and I went to the store together after class. On the way home, she says, "So... are you voting in November?" "Yeah," I said cautiously. "Kerry?" she asked tentatively. "No," I said just as carefully. "Good," she said, and we were able to have a real discussion.

Sad, but that's how it works for Republicans on campus. I'm sure you know about that. We're betting our other friend is a Dem - maybe we can get her to vote Nader.

Mmmm...cookies!

Yeah, that's about how it is where I am. What I'm finding often, though, is that the people who keep quiet about politics are generally conservative. They're just afraid of being brow beaten...

Heh...just wrote a somewhat childish poem about autumn. I used to write 'em a lot, but haven't in years. Decided to start carrying a notebook around again just for the heck of it, though. Hey, if nothing else, I can make my NaNoWriMo character write bad poetry and use my own bad poems to up the word count.

See, great plan!

The worst problem I have with poetry is that, to me, poetry is beat rather than rhyme. So I get all caught up in feet and such rather than the words...

Cookies turned out good... this is gonna be a fun weekend. Parts of it. I do have some homework to do, but not a terrible amount.

Dunno who to ask this, but...maybe you guys would know? *sigh* There's a longer story I won't get into, but basically, when I came home today, I found that one of the dogs and one of the cats were shut up together in a small space and had been all day. Now...they're both still living, which is positive. And for the most part, they didn't hurt one another. HOWEVER, Fritz has one deep gash under a foreleg, kinda in what would be his armpit if he had arms. ;-) It's not bleeding, but it's deep, and maybe half an inch long. I cleaned it and put some ointment on it, but he's licking at it and I reallly hate to put an Elizabethan collar thingie on him if I don't have to.

So...question is, are dogs usually pretty quick to heal, or if it's deep like that, am I better off having it looked at? Should I just wait and see if it starts to look infected? And what WOULD that look like, anyway?

I could beat myself for being so careless that this could happen, but it's too late now...

I have a hard time writing serious subjects with a nice beat or rhyme...typically anything rhymed that I've written has a kinda "A Child's Garden of Verses" feel to it. Unfortunately.

I've written more free or blank verse than rhymed, for that reason. When I was alone and overseas, it was a way of dealing with loneliness or depression...kinda like you torture characters, I'd write tortuous poems about death and despair. ;-)

Yep!

The Real Estate Guy put a deadline on the offer contract of 6:00 tonight because property in that neighborhood sells fast. This one has been on the market for less than a week.

It turns out that this was a rental property for 25 years. Pretty good shape for a rental. Now all I have to do is build a sunroom.

Well...the owners have had it for 25 years and were renting it out....don't know if they lived in it at one time or not.

Try reading, say, Shakespeare, or a good translation of Kalevala that preserves the meter. The rythm patterns are easier than most.

I'm trying to convince my friend to do NaNoWriMo... say, did you get an email from them yet?

It's not really a matter of not knowing a good pattern...just that somehow my rhyming is pretty hokey. I end up falling back on cliched rhymes...blank verse is so much easier! But I admit for my own reading, I like rhyme.

I'm binging on Longfellow at the moment.

Nope, no e-mail from NaNoWriMo yet. Wonder if we even have to renew, or if that's automatic.

Not bad!

Have any idea of a closing date yet?

You'll have to get better pictures of the backyard. I couldn't really see it in the pictures.
