What pleases me the most is that he retained it! He did second grade 3 years ago and still remembers it. I'm sure it's been reinforced over the years but still...I'm glad.
He's learning all these properties in Math right now...commutative, distributive, zero, associative, and one more...can't remember.

I have noticed that kids don't diagram sentences the way they used to. Wonder if that is because of the dumbing down thing.

I wonder if they're getting ready to start that in Matthew's curriculum? They've started having him underline and put a line between the subject and the predicate.

Possibly. We used to draw two lines underthe predicate, and only one under the subject. Transitive verbs took a vertical line whereas intransitive verbs took a back slanted line. Then there were all the ooky phrases and clauses. By the tiem we were done diagramming a long sentence, it looked like a tree.

I actually just used to draw a bunch of lines and fill them in randomly. I didn't have a clue.
I never even thought they might be getting ready to diagram until you brought it up! It's something I've been dreading because I don't know how to do it...but they snuck it in on me and I'm more optimistic!

I learned sentencing diagramming... IMO, it's overrated. Knowing the parts of speech is important. But if they read enough and speak well, putting together a proper sentence is natural.
Honestly, I can't remember how to diagram a sentence, but I know what a prepositional phrase is, how to make subject and verb agree, and the difference between their/there/they're. That's about as much as you really need...

In less than three weeks, I'll be the age my Mom was when she had me. Lot older than your Mom was.
Last month or so, I keep dreaming of a baby girl. Odd, 'cause I always thought growing up that I'd like a boy first. I know if it were REALLY to happen, I'd be overjoyed with either...but it's funny how often that baby shows up! Sweet little almost bald-headed blonde baby...with big dark blue eyes.
Again...*sigh*
