Equisearch letter
letter from Equisearch | 8/15/1004 | Self

Posted on 08/15/2004 6:40:18 AM PDT by HuntsvilleTxVeteran

Does anybody know anything about this company.

I recieved a letter from this company about some stock I bought thru Merril Linch in the early 80s. For years I could find no info on this stock and the broker only said my account was closed. The stock was also no longer listed on the over the counter market. I was active in the futures market and bought penny stocks with all winnings.

TOPICS: Business/Economy
KEYWORDS: helpneeded
The letter also asked for last 4 digits of my SSN.

A Google search didn't turn up anything realy applicable, unless it's a horse searh company we're talking about.

When a company comes from out of the blue and asks you for confidential information, it could be a "phish" for later identity theft.

If you must respond to them, try giving the wrong 4 numbers and see what happens.

When I googled I also saw the equine ( horse ) sites.
Redid search and came up with the above URL.
The company is a member of the NYSE.
This may not be a scam.
I wish I knew more.

The more I think about it, the shadier this sounds.

These scammers may well have come across your personal information by digging through your garbage and coming across correspondence to you from Merrill Lynch.

So they would have 1) your name and address, and 2) possibly your ML account number. All they need in order for them to pose as "you" in future communications with ML is ... the last 4 of your SS number.

You might take that letter to your local post office/postmaster and report it as possible fraud. But I wouldn't respond at all if I were you.

Equisource (Choicepoint) is ligit. If you are concerned that your letter may not be, call their cousumer support number, 1-800-477-3272, and give them the "case" number (which should be on the letter).

If your commnication was from Equisource, they will be able to give you additoinal information about your stock and the reasons they are trying to contact you.

Thanks for info.
It does have a case number.
It also had the name of the stock Credo Petroleum Corp.
It was a penny stock and I had several thousand shares.
This was bought in the early 80s and I moved back to Texas shortly after that.

I have always gotten good results from our great FRiends.

I also posted some bad info on the stock, I was thinking
of US minerals and royalties instead of Credo Petroleum.
Believe it or not I had forgotten about Credo. Credo was split several times and now sells for about
$14.80 a share.
I might be able to give FR more than my 20 bucks a month.

My husband's payroll was stolen Dec. 15, 2002. This month, May 2005, we received the "Equisearch" letter. His company researched this letter and found it is a very sophisticated scam. It is "phishing" for the complete social. They even knew very detailed info about the company's 401K plan administrator. Beware! Equisearch claims to be a ChoicePoint Company. This is the company from which personal info was stolen this past year. These scammers are hurting this company even more by associating the scam to them. Never send your social in response to an unsolicited letter.
